Kennewick won its fifth straight game and advanced to the championship game against Lexington (Ky.) today at 1 p.m. Mike Walls accounted for the Piedmont scoring with a two-run single that plated Ryan Majchr-zak and Shawn Thomas. Thomas had three of Piedmont's five hits, including two doubles. "It was a great run, and we had a great time," said Piedmont Coach Bob Thomas. "We needed a couple of hits with men on base tonight and didn't get them.

Canal's bid for the Major League Softball World Series title came to an abrupt end with an 11-2 loss to Essexville, late Thursday night. The Delaware champions, who ripped 21 hits against Canada a day earlier, could manage only five in the losers' bracket game of the tournament for 11- and 12-year-olds. Canal finished the tournament with two victories and two losses, ending the summer with a fine 14-2 overall record. Officially, Canal finished fourth in the World Series.

"When we began back in June, I told the girls that there were over 1,000 teams that wanted to be here, and we knew it was a long shot," said Canal Manager Bill Nefosky. "But we made it." "I'm very proud we were here and it's going to be fun going back to school," said Canal right fielder Melissa Perez, who had one of Canal's five hits. "Everybody will be talking about our trip." Essexville broke the game open with seven runs in the third inning on four hits and a pair of Canal errors. That was all Michigan's starting pitcher, Quinn Zacharko, needed to get the victory. She struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Canal's starter, Erica Richardson, struck out three and walked four, but could not repeat her performance on Tuesday, when she pitched a no-hitter against the Philippines. "You have to give credit to the Central team Essexville; they came out and hit Erica pretty well," Nefosky said. "They're a pretty solid team." Canal never could overcome losing its very first tournament game, 4-0 to Waco, Texas, and dropping into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Canal came back to beat the Philippines and then Canada before its loss to Essexville. "It's was an uphill battle in the losers' bracket, but these girls thought they had a shot if we got to play Waco again," Nefosky said.

"These guys have been providing a lot of punch for us pitchers to work with," Brakeley said. "I wouldn't have had half the success I've had this summer if it weren't for the guys behind me." Brakeley also gave extra credit for his catcher, Pat Krouse, whom he said called a great game for him.

Sportscare Manager Alan Warrington admitted, "They came out. and hit the ball and we didn't play very well." Warrington also recognized the performance by Brakeley, saying, "With him, all you need to do is get on top and he's going to be very, very tough. "They're. tough. They're the defending champs.

They're going to be tough to beat. "We're not going to give up. We'll come out fighting Monday," which is when the series resumes. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Banning Park as Guy Johnson will play for the title.

when Joe DeGregory, who earlier blooped a hit behind first base, scored on Joe Singley's smash single down the left field line. But the tide turned after that. Guy Johnson, who finished with 12 hits, scored two runs each in the second through fourth inning. Guy Johnson then sent 10 men to the plate in fifth for a six-run explosion, which included four Sportscare errors. Of Brakeley's effort, Talley had nothing but praise.

"He was still striking them out with that 10-run lead. Some pitchers would lose their concentration. He pitched great." For Brakeley, who won the series opener when he struck out 11, it was the first time he was pitching on three days rest in the past four years. "I was a little wary, but the arm felt good," Brakeley said. "I prefer pitching in closer games because I tend to bear down a little better."
