The Hens moved to the 3 four plays into the second quarter. But, on a fourth-and-two, Craig Carroll was stopped at the 3 and West Chester took over. Two plays into the Hens' next series, which began at the Ram 44, Zwaan passed 41 yards to tight end Gregg Perry for the score.

Com-, plete stories on Sports 3. NCAA finals last December. "We want another chance in the playoffs," he said, cutting tape off an ankle injured against Villanova two weeks ago. "Now, I think we have a good chance.

It's up to us. We have to beat Indiana State (next week)." Beasley, whose 124 yards gave him exactly 1,000 for the season, had a wild first half as he gained 109 on 20 carries. Zwaan completed eight of 14 passes for 111 yards and the Hens led 14-7. The scoreless first quarter downs, James scored three TD's on two receptions and a run, and Beasley rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown. That offensive display, coupled with upset losses by Lehigh and Massachusetts, upped the Hens' chances considerably for post-season play.

"Last year (31-3 Delaware victory), we hurt them on the sweep," said James, who scored on a 50-yard pass from Zwaan, a 19-yard toss from from Jim Maskas and a Hens hopes layoffs VSports Editor 24-yard scamper. "This time they were sweep-conscious. We set it (TD catches) up on a sweep-action play. I just faked the block and took off. It seemed like I was only in for a few plays.

It's just luck I guess." The burly James, who scored just one TD all last season, remembered the excellent game he had against West Chester in 1974. That's when he rushed for 111 yards on those sweeps. But he also Beasley yr VIA 7 -7 ji ta f. -75 -7 A y7 'r 1 7 AC 77 7 ti A jgJr7V Ww "ii7 llailil, AL wares have scraped themselves off the canvas and the playoffs are very much a possibility. The two front-running teams in line for invitations from the East got upset yesterday while Delaware was rolling over West Chester 35-7 with its best showing of the autumn.

And you know what? Tubby Raymond has reversed his anti-bowl stand. Tubby Raymond wants to go to the playoffs. So bad he can taste it. When the Delaware Stadium public address announcer told the 18,488 shivering fans that New Hampshire had shocked Massachusetts 14-11 Raymond led a sideline cheer. And when he heard that Bucknell had jolted Lehigh 32-25 Raymond shouted above the dressing room celebration, "I can't believe it!" These are trying times in the personal life of Tubby Raymond.

His mother-in-law is seriously ill in Sarasota, and he has already had to make one quick trip there to be with her and his wife. If there was ever a season when Raymond could use a break, it's now. But Tubby Raymond wants to take this football team all the way to the playoffs. "I want to go really," Raymond said after yesterday's victory on the cold, crystal afternoon upped the Hens' record to 7-3. "It would be an outstanding achievement for this football team.

It has come back after being in the bottom of the well. It deserves to go." It was difficult to believe that yesterday's Blue Hens who rolled up 519 yards, including 257 passing, were the same ones who staggered against Wittenberg and Lehigh before being intimidated by Temple. Delaware put it together yesterday against a West Chester team that appeared to be stronger on the surface than Wittenberg. For the first time this confusing season the Blue Hens presented Raymond with a complete game, a day-late birthday gift if you will. Tubby was 49 Friday.

"It's not really difficult to figure," said the coach who is in his See RAYMOND Page 3 Bj GENE QUINN Billy Zwaan's passing act, Tom James' catching act and Nate Beasley's running act just may have earned Delaware's football team an NCAA Division II playoff berth. Heck, you're safer when you say something about Temple. Tubby Raymond hates playoff games, bowl games any game that prolongs the football season. The Delaware coach has taken the Blue Hens to six of them in nine years and he's agonized over everyone of them.

Raymond has been preaching against the NCAA College Division playoffs so much nobody bothers to listen anymore. Three weeks ago the Blue Hens got blown out of Delaware Stadium by Temple 45-0 and everybody felt they didn't have to worry about Raymond's sermon. Now, lo and behold the Dela- 76er win in three overtimes By GARY MULLINAX Staff Correspondent PHILADELPHIA The 76ers edged the Washington Bullets 110-109 in three overtimes before frazzled onlookers at the Spectrum last night. Coneil Norman, who had seen little action all evening, popped two mid-range jumpers early in the third overtime to provide the margin. George McGinnis, whose ball handling and shooting brought the Sixers back from a 79-73 deficit late in the fourth quarter to a 91-all tie at the end of regulation play, fouled out with 1:26 left.

He was eventually joined by Billy Cunningham of the Sixers and Washington's Wes Unseld as reserves had to handle much of the overtime action. The hustling Cunningham, who scored 18 points and consistently outfought bigger men for rebounds, scored twice in the first overtime, but the Bullets' Clem Haskins hit a 21-foot jumper with 21 seconds left to knot the score at 99 after the first overtime. Each team scored only three points in the second overtime, as Carter hit one free throw and Mix two for the Sixers. Carter hit a 15-footer in the final overtime and it was his layup after a drive across the lane that gave Philadelphia the 91-91 tie at the end of regulation play. Carter, the cool hand the Sixers went to in the hectic overtimes, picked up 21 points for the night.

McGinnis led the Sixers with 29 points, followed by Carter, Doug Collins with 19, Cunningham with See 76ERS Page 11 TV-Radio Sports TELEVISION FOOTBALL 9( 29) Notre Dame Highlights: Notre Dame vs. Pitt from Pitt Stadium. The Pitt back meant his offensive line's play, but the execution turned out to be Notre Dame's. Dorsett erupted for 303 yards rushing yesterday at Pitt Stadium as Pitt upset the Irish 34-20 to keep Notre Dame's Cotton-picking hands out of the Bowl jumble. The Irish had a Cotton Bowl bid waiting. In fact, a Cotton Bowl representative had told Notre Dame a victory meant an automatic invitation to meet the Southwest Conference winner on New Year's day. The Cotton picker should've talked to Dorsett first.

"This is the biggest win of my career," bubbled Dorsett, who burned the touted Irishdefense for option runs of 57 and 71 and caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Pitt soph Matt Cavanaugh.
