Daniel W. 'Johnson was born near Vernon, Sept. 28, 1840. His father was ('. R.

Johnson, a well-to-do Jennings county farmer. At the age of lifteen he went to Richmond where be learned the carriage makers trade. In the spring of 18il he entered the army, enlisting in the 16th Indiana regiment at Connersville. His term of enlistment expired in the fall of 18i2 when he came to Seymour and engaged in the manufacture of wagons and buggies in partnership with his brother, William. He followed that business here successfully for twenty-eight years.

He was then appointed of the Seymour Water Company which position he held for over twelve years, until he had to give it up on account of failing health.
