CIO Albuquerque Journal Tuesday, March 11, 1997 Recreational 4143. Vehicles Sports 4208. Equipment Legals Legals Legals Rappers' Rivalry: Feud or Just Talk? legitimate," said Don Cornelius, creator and executive producer of television's "Soul Train" music show. But Phyllis Pollack, a publicist with Def Press in Los Angeles who has represented several rap stars, said it's unfair to speculate that, the deaths were the result of a coastal feud. "Sure, there's been this competition, but that's been since day one," she said.

"We don't have artists on the West Coast saying, 'Let's kill off all of those East Coast rappers so we can sell more records on the East The rivalry developed in the 1980s as West Coast rappers grew popular, surpassing many -East Coast rappers' record salesThe Notorious B.I.G., also called Biggie Smalls, was credited with reviving the East Coast scene a few years ago, building his gangsta rap persona around his troubled past that included time he spent as a Crack dealer. His feud with Shakur, which went beyond any East Coast-West Coast rivalry, was personal, and it accelerated in 1994 after Shakur was robbed of $40,000 in jewelry and shot several times. Shakur insisted Wallace was behind the attack, though Wallace denied it. Shakur also claimed to have slept with Faith Evans, Wallace's estranged wife, bragging about it in a song. Jesse Washington, managing editor of VIBE magazine, which sponsored the party Wallace attended, noted there was animosity between the rappers.

But he cautioned against reading too much into their deaths. "It's too early to attribute this tqa coastal rivalry, Tupac revenge or anything else because there's just so-many different possibilities and aspects to this whole situation," Washington said. More importantly, he said, the deaths are a "sad reflection on the level of violence in our community." "The saddest thing about all of this is they have literally generated tens of millions of dollars in sales of records, magazine sales and ratings," he said. "I mean, these -were two popular artists." Z-Zl Drive-by shooting of The Notorious B.I.G. echoes last year's slaying of Tupac Shakur By Michelle Dkarmond The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Industry leaders long tried to dismiss a simmering feud between West Coast rapper Tbpac Shakur and his East Coast counterpart The Notorious B.I.G.

as just an overblown publicity stunt. Now both are dead, victims of almost identical drive-by shootings six months apart, leaving fans and investigators wondering if the coastal rivalry is more than an act. No arrests have been made in the September shooting of Shakur, 25. The Notorious B.I.G.'s killing Sunday morning also shows little promise of a quick arrest. Shakur was in Las Vegas, with Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight on Sept.

7 when he was shot while sitting in the passenger seat of Knight's car. He died in the hospital a week later. Knight, who was slightly injured, has been described as uncooperative by Las Vegas police. The Notorious B.I.G., whose real name was Christopher Wallace, had just left a party celebrating the Soul Train Awards when he was shot by someone in a passing car as he sat in a parked GMC Suburban. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Las Vegas police say they have no indication the two shootings are related. "We really can't say because we haven't spoken to anyone from Los Angeles," homicide Sgt. Kevin Manning said. "We don't know if there's any linkage." Some have said the artists were victims of gang violence, while still others say the deaths were the culmination of a growing East Coast-West Coast rivalry that typifies the violence of so-called "gangsta rap." "I think that it's time that the authorities got serious about recognizing that the East Coast-West Coast thing is dangerous, and it's que, New Mexico, at 1:15 o'clock p.m., on the (nn day of April, 1997, during a regular term of the Court, or as soon thereafter as the matter may be heard, for an Order lor a change of name of her biological daughter from Bnanna Cheree Dotsey to Bnanna Choree Hinkle. In my judgment, he was overlooked by the more interesting personalities, such as (James Stockdale." Stockdale, who ran as the Independent Party's vice presidential candidate with Ross Perot in 1992, was the highest-ranking military prisoner in Hanoi until Flynn's F-105 was shot down in 1967. But Flynn was segregated from the rest of the POWs until January 1971, when he took over as senior ranking officer. "He was primarily responsible for getting us truly organized," Stockman said. Flynn made sure POWs' lengthy imprisonment did not affect their careers and promotions. He had officers covertly keep efficiency reports on subordinates.

After "Operation Homecoming" in 1973, the reports became "a very vital part" of the POWs' performance evaluations, Stockman said. Flynn made several presentations at Kirtland Air Force Base and maintained contact with former POWs and other military officials in New Mexico. "The guy did a cracker jack job over there," Stockman said. Bv Pai'I. Logan Journal Staff Writer Gen.

John P. Flynn played an unsung leadership role for U.S. prisoners of war in Hanoi, Vietnam. Flynn, who had many Air Force friends in New Mexico, died Wednesday in San Antonio, Texas. The retired lieutenant general was buried Monday at Fort Sam Houston.

He was 74. Hervey Stockman of Albuquerque, a retired colonel and former Vietnam POW, said Monday that Flynn's cause of death was combination of old age and "the deprivations he experienced while in prison" in North Vietnam from 1967 to 1973. Stockman, held nearly six years in a prison known as the "Hanoi Hilton," said he shared a cell block with Flynn. He said Flynn "had never been recognized adequately" as the POWs' leader during their final years of incarceration. "Gen.

Flynn was a fine man, a gentle man who was very humorous and very eloquent," he said. "Once he was back in the U.S., he went on about his business and really did not try and capitalize on his prisoner-of-war experience. "He was very helpful to all POWs. Chavez died Friday of natural causes. He was 63. Services will be held this morning at 10 at San Ignacio Church, 1300 Walter NE. Albuquerque Police Chief Joe Polisar, a son-in-law, said Monday that Chavez served more than 20 years in the Air Force. Polisar said his wife, Elizabeth "Liz," had an interesting childhood, living in places like Germany and Italy.

After Chavez retired as a staff sergeant, he worked about nine years for the Albuquerque Parks Management Department, mostly with grounds maintenance. "Everyone in Martineztown knew CHAVEZ: Known for his sense of humor ing homes. He was a member of VFVV Post No. 99. Other survivors include his former wife, Margaret Chavez; a son, Valentino "Tino" Chavez and his fiancee, Christy Estrada; and four grandchildren, all of Albuquerque.

Burial will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery..
