Four ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL January 11, 1959 Burroughs' Office Staff Knows Politics By MAURICE TRIMMER SANTA FE (UPI) is it like to work directly for the new governor of New Mexico? 'It's a wonderful experience." "I enjoy having a part in government in helping people." love everything about politics." So say the receptionist and two secretary stenographers who serve in Gov. John Burroughs' office. They are Beatrice Roach Co Gottlieb of Santa Fe, Mrs. Ernestine D. Evans of Santa Fe and Mrs.

Alberta Miller of Albuquerque. Apparently Burroughs and his. trio aide, for Dick their Valdez, professional picked political know-how as well as good looks, office experience and pleasant telephone voices. Youngest in Nation Mrs. Gottlieb, slim brunette receptionist, served two terms as secretary of state, from 1951-55.

She was the youngest secretary of state in the nation at the time of her inauguration. Mrs. Evans went to the legislature in 1940 from Rio Arriba County, the only woman to have ever represented Rio Arriba. Mrs. Miller, who says she "grew up with politics at home in Dodge City, went to work at the "Burroughs for Governor" headquarters in Albuquerque before the primaries and continued in Democratic headquarters throughout the election campaign.

The governor's team has what is known in football circles as "depth." Valdez, Burroughs' quietspeaking, fast-moving right, arm is a native of Las Vegas, which has produced a number of outstanding state politicians. He started working on the governor's campaign 19 months ago, when Burroughs was still considered a political unknown from Portales. Valdez was financial director of the state hospital at Las Vegas when Burroughs asked him to help survey the state to see what his possibilities were of winning the governor's office. Long Working Day His work day during Burroughs' first week as governor has included 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

for talking to visiting citizens and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for digging away at correspondence and other necessary paper work. Asked how he and Burroughs get along, Valdez said that after the long campaign stretch, "We know each other's temperaments pretty well." Mrs. Gottlieb, whose father, Charles Bassett, is director of the state gasoline tax division, caught the political bug early.

She said it started when, still a teen-ager, she went to work for Second Crash Victim Located Journal Special LAS VEGAS State police discovered Saturday that a second man was apparently in the wrecked jeep in which a Las Vegas man was found dead Friday. Identified as Arthur Tafoya, (36, Las Vegas, he is in St. Anthony's hospital. He suffered head and leg injuries as well as a broken arm. State Patrolman Eddie Apo.

daca said Tafoya had been in the hospital about an hour prior to the time he located the jeep in which Filadelfio Armijo died. This, he said, was apparently 12 hours after the accident. Apodaca said Tafoya apparently left the wrecked jeep about one-half mile north of the Las Vegas city limits and walked to a night club at the city limits where his sister, Mrs. Lala Marquez, was working. She, in turn, took him home and finally to the hospital.

Apodaca said it had been established that Armijo was driving the vehicle when it hit a guard post and plunged to the bottom of Pecos Arroyo. Physicist Will Lecture At Highlands University Journal Special LAS VEGAS- -Dr. Park H. Miller, head of the experimental physics group of the general atomic division, General Dynamics Corp. will serve as a visiting lecturer at New Mexico Highlands University Monday and Tuesday.

He will visit under the auspices of the American Assn. of Physics Teachers, of which he is past president, and the American Institute of Physics as part of a broad, nationwide program to stimulate interest in physics. The program is now in its second year. vertising agency before joining the Burroughs headquarters last January. Lived In Gallup Her husband is a Santa Fe railway supervisor, and they lived in Gallup for 10 years before moving to Albuquerque in 1945.

As office manager at the Burroughs' and later the Democratic headquarters, she waded into the campaign battle, helping set up precinct schools for workers, preparing publicity and distributing party information. A confirmed Democrat, Mrs. said, "you have to be sold on it before you can sell it to the people." The three are housewives as well. Mrs. Gottlieb and Mrs.

Miller have three children, Mrs. Evans one. Valdez tops the roll, however, with two boys and two girls. USED SPINET Walnut finish $395.00 Teamster Chief On Labor Board Continued from Page 0 One for comment Saturday. However, back in when national Teamsters Union being investigated by a Senate Committee, he was quoted saying his union represented about 1000 members across state.

La Near replaces James Price of Albuquerque, president of the AFL-CIO, on commission. Others replaced were G. L. Guthrie of Vegas and Joe D. Sena Santa Fe.

Declines Comment Tom Robles, executive tary of the AFL-CIO, declined comment on Burroughs' labor commission appointments other than to say, John Near will do a a good job as commissioner." The Teamsters have been pelled from the AFL-CIO on national level. The union participated in past Democratic elections, having contributed $8000 to the Simms for Governor Committee. in through Albuquerque equipment dealer, has been very close to Burroughs. Sedillo, long considered close to U. S.

Sen. Dennis Chavez, replaces one-time U. S. Atty. Paul Larrazolo, and will serve in the Albuquerque district fice.

He has been a controversial political figure for years, and his name figured prominently in the first campaign conducted by Republican Mechem against former Gov. John E. Miles. Mechem criticized the Democrats for having kept Sedillo on the payroll consumer's counsel for Public Service Commission--a job later abolished. Kelly replaces Col.

C. Mears in the traffic position. Mears gained a reputation his toughness in handling traffic violators, and his actions have been given much of credit for an improved traffic fatality record last year. Dick Valdez, Burroughs' ministrative assistant, Kelly's status in the party sition "now is being worked out." However, it is expected he will resign as party chairman. Speculation has placed Thomas G.

Trotter, party chairman in Pct. 33 in the Heights, in the front-running position. It was reported Trotter-president of the First Thrift and Loan Assn. -has the backing of Kelly and Gov. Burroughs.

Replaces Mears Kelly, a former bus driver, will move into a spot which has been paying $10,000 a year. The Sedillo job has been paying about $500 a month and is a part-time post.
