Now, a year later, two more heavy metal dinosaurs, Ozzy Osbourne and Sammy Hagar, are being featured on MTV, the music channel Lhat deserted them when Nirvana hit big.

What's going on here? Is '80s rock back? Maybe. I mean Pat Benatar is touring with 70s warhorse Styx (which come to the Pit in July), '80s popmetal Ratt has a new album coming out soon and is touring (it plays Midnight Rodeo Sunday), and Night Ranger's original lineup is bac together (it plays Midnight Rodeo Tuesday). Now local radio is reflecting these changes, sort of, thanks to Trumper Communications' purchase of KZRR-FM (94 Rock), KLSK-FM and KTEG-FM (107.9 The Sun. Bo 4 Whistle Thur. Billy oe Shaver Country $8 Sat. Chillin' Circuit (1-6) Free Sun. Susan Clark (1-6) Free KLSK has revrted to its original format: best of the 'fiOs. 70s, '80s and a little bit of the '90s. 94 Rock has draped its "Cutting Edge of Rock" approach, leaving the alternative stuff to sister station The Edge.

Instead, 94 Rock has returned to straight-up rock mostly '80s stuff. "We've found the resurgence of the '80s stuff was by demand," said 94 Rock program director Phil Mahoney, "people who grew up on 94 Rock playing ACDC, Van Halen, the Scorpions." Hut corporate maneuvering isn't the only reason for the return of straight-up rock to Albuquerque airwaves. The resurgence of rock is a national phenomenon, according to KLSK program director Rick Anderson. "Nationally, classic rock is still very viable1," he said. "It does very well on a national scale.

In the last year classic rock has gained ground on other formats. Alternative has lost some ground, due to the fact that luster has worn off alternative music. It's just not as good as it was when Nirvana and Soundgarden first came out and they were still unique." Blame the record companies. "When the genuine article comes out, like Nirvana or Pearl Jam, and they have such success, record labels look for bands that sound like them," Mahoney said. "After a while the market is saturated with clones.

The same thing happened with metal and bands like Warrant and Slaughter. The quality starts diminishing. "Those bands might have had a good song or two, but they couldn't hold up." So while the national media trumpets the deaths of grunge and alternative and tries to sell the nation that techno dance (a la the Chemical Brothers and Prodigy) will grab listeners like Nirvana did, it seems Albuquerque will remain devoted to rock. "I don't think you can wait for next big thing," Mahoney said of recent trends. Tou have to listen to the people.

You can't tell people what to like. You have to let people tell you what they want to hear. "Until something great and new comes out, we'll try to supply them with great music."
