D2 The News-Journal papers Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1985 Today's television 7:30 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 10:00 10:30 11:00 11:30 12:00 12:30 Saving 'MacGyver' is ABCs personal mission impossible Television by Bill Hayden Sometimes, a television network has a weekly series it feels doesn't deserve to fail. The reasons vary, but the style of the rescue attempt is invariably the same. Right now, a ritual to gain public acceptance is under way for "Mac-Gyver," WPVI-TV (6), WJZ-TV (13), WMDT-TV (47), tonight at 8. The kid-oriented adventure hour is normally seen Sunday nights at 8.

Or rather, not seen because most people are watching CBS' "Murder, She Wrote" or NBC's "Amazing Stories" at that time. The competition doesn't give "MacGyver" a chance to fail honestly, on its own. Now, ABC is open to criticism from parent groups for having a bundle of shows low on pro-social values and high on violence. For reasons merely politic, "MacGyver" which is highly pro-social, low in violence is worthy of a salvage effort. The show isn't a dramatic heavyweight by any means.

But, like Richard Dean Anderson's character of MacGyver, it is pleasant and unassuming. Since there aren't many series around with those qualities, they make it worth saving. The man is a pack rat, collecting ordinary items of seemingly little value and stashing them in his ever-present knapsack.

He combines scientific knowledge with these items to improvise his way out of trouble. Based on scientific fact, he might use a candy bar to stop an acid leak. Or a cold pill to make a bomb. Or put together a makeshift rocket thruster with a flare gun. My only problem with the show is that I keep expecting Anderson to turn to the camera and say, "Kids, don't try this at home without adult supervision." Still, that's a small quibble.

I generally approve of ABC's ploy to do what Anderson's character can't do for himself save "MacGyver." In the effort to save the show, the network is using the most direct, most effective form of action. It is moving the series around to different time slots on different nights. In October, it tried a "MacGyver" episode on a Monday night. This time, it's a Wednesday night. Wider exposure and better per formance could easily result in "MacGyver" replacing another series that is shaky in the ratings.

In tonight's episode, Anderson travels to Wyoming to help a friend who is in danger of losing all he owns in wildcatting for oil. In drilling, the friend has struck a pocket of natural gas and his derrick has blown up. Anderson's task is to move through a cloud of poisonous gas, put out the raging fire and cap the hole. There's never any question about whether he'll succeed after all, he's the hero but what ingenious methods will he use? Remember, kids, not to try this at home without adult supervision. Applications are being accepted for auditions for those who want to perform on the annual "Variety Club Telethon" being carried by WPVI-TV (6) Feb.

Bill Hayden is a staff critic whose television column appears daily in 5 7 Gannett newspapers. Channel 61 delays on-air starting date Construction delays at its studio and transmitter sites have forced Wilmington's WBOT-TV (61) to push back its target date for going on the air to the end of the year, general manager Dan Slape said Tuesday. In September, Slape said the station hoped to begin broadcasting as an independent station "by The delay means that WBOT-TV will not be carrying several of the 15 basketball games it has scheduled this season under a contract with Philadelphia's Big Five college basketball teams. Immediately affected are the Monday meeting at the Palestra between the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California and the Dec. 7 game between Pen- nyslvania and the University of Delaware in Newark.

In doubt is coverage of the Dec. 21 game between LaSalle College and Ford-ham University at the Palestra. Both Slape and Big Five officials say there is a clause in their contract that allows the station to substitute other games later in the season for those missed if it is not on the air. WBOT will be a full-powered UHF station with studios on A Street near Walnut and a transmitter in South Harrison Township, N.J. Its signal would cover a 50-mile radius, with Dover just inside its southern limit.
