He's a happily married man, which is rather rare," although his even-tempered wife, Joyce (Jane Wymark), is a dreadful cook who fancies herself a gourmet specialist.

At home, Barnaby isn't a hearty eater for obvious reasons, but you'll find him grabbing for junk food snacks whenever they're handy. He also has an attractive daughter, Cully (Laura Howard), who is grown up and seems to have turned out quite well. Barnaby's ongoing trial is his relationship with Sgt. Troy, who's a lousy driver and an investigator who's apt to say the wrong thing, usually to the wrong people. "You're as politically correct as a Nuremberg rally," Barnaby observes at one point.

Today's mystery is particularly puzzling because it may be linked in some way to the death of a wealthy woman during a bird-hunting outing a year earlier. Her death was labeled an accident when the authorities couldn't establish who fired the fatal shotgun blast, but new suspicions about her death are mounting now that her aged, wheelchair-bound husband (Julian Glover) is about to marry his beau- It 9 LE Knight Ridder Newspapers Elderly Emily Simpson is overjoyed when she discovers a rare specimen of orchid while hiking in the Woods near the village of Badger's Drift. Adapted by Anthony Horowitz from 1987 novel by Caroline G-raham, "The Killings at Badger's Drift" is a good old-fashioned murder-mystery in the tradition of day. It's part of a move to broaden and extend the network's popular mystery lineup, which already has brought us the "Cracker" and "Silent Witness" mysteries, along with the cases of Dalziel Pascoe, Anna Lee and other British sleuths.

Because Barnaby and Troy are a team of police detectives, comparisons with the teams of Inspector Morse-Sgt. Lewis and Dalziel-Pas-coe are inevitable. You'll find that Barnaby isn't quite as grouchy as Morse nor as low-class as Dalziel. In this team, he's the erudite gentleman and his sidekick is the foul-mouthed lout, which is the reverse of Reginald Hill's Dalziel Pascoe dynamic. Barnaby is inclined toward heavy sarcasm when dealing with Sgt.

Troy, but he doesn't treat him quite as shabbily as Morse often treats the smarter, more-earnest Sgt. Lewis.
