TV-ENTERTAINMENT Tuesday, December 17, 1985 Albuquerque Journal Page 11, Section A PREVIEWS Amnesty Ends for Cable TV Pirates By Rick Nathanson JOURNAL STAFF WRITER 3 Teams of auditor inspectors will begin fanning out across the city to examine taps, the cable access points into homes and apartment buildings. "We will compare the number of taps to the subscriber list to determine if people are receiving services they are paying for, and likewise those they are not paying for," Rosen said. He added, "We believe there are still several thousand people in the Albuquerque metro area who are getting some level of cable service illegally, and we will prosecute when we find them." ated, about 250 people in the Albuquerque metropolitan area have come forward and admitted to cable-service theft, Rosen said. "We got their names, addresses and asked what service they cared to continue. We then sent an installer out to verify and install the correct services, sometimes adding or removing equipment." He estimated that 60 percent of those people were subscribers who received cable services for which they didn't pay, and the remaining 40 percent were non-subscribers who had illegally tapped into the basic cable service.

for cable service providers to prove that there was criminal intent by a person illegally receiving any cable service, regardless of how that cable signal was received, explained Jeff Rosen, marketing director for Albuquerque Cable Televsion, Inc. The campaign was sponsored by Home Box Office cable network and the New Mexico Cable Television Association, a non-profit organization made up of the operators of 38 cable systems from around the state. Since the campaign was initi An amnesty giving people pirating cable television services a chance to come clean ended Monday, and violators may now find themselves paying fines of up to $300 and serving up to six months in jail. The amnesty was announced during a radio and newspaper campaign begun Oct. 21, which was designed to publicize a change in a state law that defined theft of cable services.

With that change, it is no longer necessary it J. Channel 23 etnrns to the Airwaves Angela Lansbury, left, and Lee Remick star in "Gift of Love." that the Albuquerque religious market is already served by KCHF-TV, Channel 11, in Santa Fe, Hodges said, "the more the merrier." He noted that KCHF has in the past some of the programming syndicated by Trinity. "Channel 11 is a friend of Trinity Broadcasting Network. Our purposes are the same, and that is to reach the world with the Gospel of Jesus and to be instrumental in bringing the body of Christ together in unity." Carson Communications, the parent company of Albuquerque Broadcasting, yanked the station from the air last May 1, in the wake of financial problems. Syndicating companies refused to provide services because of unpaid bills and the station turned to broadcasting around-the-clock music videos in a last-ditch attempt to keep it on the air while negotiations for its sale continued.

Among the former owners of the station were TV personalities Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Joan Rivers. program syndicated over the Trinity Broadcasting Network. The Crouches began the network about 15 years ago. Their first station was in Tustin, Calif. KNAT is Trinity's eighth full-power station.

The network is also buying or building nine other full-power stations, owns 83 medium-power stations, and has 850 cable affiliates. Channel 23 will broadcast religious programming 24 hours a day. The station's signal will be broadcast over a radius of about 80 miles. All the programming will be via satellite feed from Trinity's operations in Santa Ana, Calif. The KNAT studio in Albuquerque currently has the equipment necessary for production of local shows, Hodges said, but local production is part of future plans that have no timetable.

Hodges, the former associate pastor of the Gateway Baptist Church in Roswell, predicted the success of the religious-format station. "I believe Albuquerque is really ready for that type of broadcasting." Noting By Rick Nathanson JOURNAL STAFF WRITER After a hiatus of nearly nine months, Albuquerque television station KNAT, Channel 23, has returned to the airwaves. Gone are the rock 'n' roll music videos, which have been replaced with the word of Christ. An assignment of license was granted on Dec. 4, to Trinity Broadcasting of according to Callie Holder, an issues researcher with the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C.

A purchase agreement on file with the FCC shows that Albuquerque Broadcasting Corp. sold the station for $2.25 million, Ms. Holder said. The documents also list Paul F. Crouch, of Newport Beach, as president of Trinity Broadcasting, and his wife, Janice Crouch, as vice president.

The new general manager of KNAT, Gary Hodges, said Crouch and his wife are host of "Praise the Lord," an evangelical Christian MOVIE "The Gift of Love: A Christmas Story." (Made-for-TV 1985). A Yuletide yarn, heavy on the sentiment. It deals with a dream which takes heroine Lee Remick back home in fantasy to visit her dead parents and aunt. to a better time. Angela Lansbury is all home cooking and homilies while Polly Holliday strikes the only responsive chord as a maiden aunt with a suitor from the past who visits every Christmas Eve. All in all, an appropriate but flawed Christmas entry. (8 p.m. Channel 13) GROWING PAINS "A Christmas Story." One of psychiatrist Jason's patients is so depressed after flopping as Santa Claus at an orphanage that he threatens to jump down Jason's chimney in a novel suicide attempt.

Jason isn't at home when the patient first arrives and the Seaver kids do what they can to talk Santa down. (7:30 p.m. Channel 7) REMINGTON STEELE "Dancer, Prancer, Donner and Steele." Your chance to see gun-carrying Santas invade a party and turn it into a siege. Dressed as Santas, a trio of terrorists invade the detective agency's Christmas party and hold Laura, Remington, Mildred and assorted workers as hostages. Offbeat Christmas yarn.

Carroll KNIGHT-RIDDER NEWSPAPERS WASHINGTON Arthur Raymond, who was chief engineer on the DC-3 for Douglas Aircraft, recounted how he went to New York from California in 1935 to talk with TWA officials about the development of the new plane. "We decided, because there had been quite a number of airline accidents at that time and because we wanted to get there to go by train," Raymond recalled.

That story pretty much sums up what commercial air travel was twin-engined aircraft with heat, air conditioning, a galley kitchen and a then-unheard of capacity of 28 passengers. Just as the railroad that opened the West transformed the United States, the DC-3 altered forever the traveling habits of humanity. Within four years of its introduction, DC-3s were carrying about 80 percent of the world's airline passengers. During World War II, the DC-3 became the C-47 and dotted the skies as Allied troop and cargo carriers. That Changed the World." Other planes were certainly important in furthering man's conquest of the air the Wright Brothers' flyer and Charles Lindbergh's "Spirit of St.

Louis" top that list. But it was the DC-3 that revolutionized commercial air travel which, for the first 3V2 decades of powered was for the brave and the rich. Before Douglas' airplane, passenger planes were boxy, three-engine rattletraps, unheated, un-cooled and uncomfortable. By contrast, the DC-3 was a sleek, like in the 1930s: It was expensive, uncomfortable, unreliable and often downright dangerous. And then along came the DC-3, that sturdy, streamlined workhorse of a plane created by Donald Douglas, Arthur Raymond and the geniuses at Douglas Aircraft Co.

Tonight at 8 on Channel 5 exactly 50 years after the plane's first flight from Santa Monica, Calif. "NOVA" offers a paean to the DC-3. Not every day, to be sure; only on those days when there is something greater to gain. In most games, South wins his heart ace and plays the king and ace of trumps. A diamond is led and South's 10 goesto West's ace.

West cashes a heart, leads another heart to force South to ruff, and it's all over. When East's diamond queen fails to drop under South's king, the defenders score a total of one heart, two diamonds and one club, down one. A better approach to losing only one diamond trick accepts the possibility of losing a trump trick a risk that South should accept to win two entries to dummy. After winning his heart ace, South should lead a trump to dummy's eight, finessing against West's nine. When this wins, South finesses against East's diamond queen.

Later he returns to dummy with the trump ace, and the repeated diamond finesse earns him 10 tricks. Many will go down only one with today's cards. Only those with a touch of class will risk down two. BID WITH THE ACES 12-17-B South holds: 62 5 2 Q54 KQJ97 North South 1 NT ANSWER: Three no-trump. The solid club-holding tips the scales in favor of the slight overbid.
