"When the team puts runs on the board, then I come in and throw good pitches." Vancouver is in much the same position as the Dukes at this point in the season. The Canadians trailed Northern Division-leading Calgary by two games coming into Friday. Albuquerque came in two games behind Colorado Springs and Tucson in the Southern Division. Vancouver might move up in the standings if it continues to pitch well against the Dukes. Perschke allowed seven hits and two earned runs in seven-plus innings.

I Aft By Barbara Chavez JOURf-JAL STAFF WRITER The Albuquerque Dukes ran into a storm on the way home from their Phoenix road trip, but that was mild compared to the Vancouver pitchers they battled Friday night at the Sports Stadium. Greg Perschke and Brian Drah-man led the Canadians to a 3-2 victory over the Dukes in a Pacific Coast League baseball game. Perschke (94) didn't allow a hitter past second base until the eighth inning when he ran into trouble. Vancouver led 3-0 going into the eighth. The Dukes then were able to get to Perschke, who has won four of his last five starts.

Rafael Bournigal led off the inning with a double to left field. After Jose Munoz doubled, Perschke was lifted for the PCL's top reliever, Drahman. He has 22 saves. The No. 2 reliever in the league, Tim Scott of Las Vegas, had 15 saves going into Friday.

Drahman said he isn't surprised Pirates Earn 8th in a Row With 5J Win Over Cards THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS Randy Tomlin pitched eight innings of five-hit ball to win his first game since June 22 as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 Friday night for their eighth straight victory. The winning streak is one shy of the Pirates' season-high nine-game streak from April 12-22 that gave them an early cushion in the NL East. The Pirates also moved 3Va games ahead of second-place Montreal and knocked the sagging Cardinals 10 games back.

It took Tomlin (11-7) eight tries to get his 11th victory as he ended a four-game losing streak and continued the Pirates' mastery of SL Louis. "I've pitched good and just haven't gotten any breaks to win a lot of Tomlin said. "As long as we go out and win and I pitch good, I've done my job." "I don't worry about when they win, I worry about how they pitch," Pirates manager Jim Leyland said. "He's done a good job. He's pitched pretty well." Reds 4, Giants 3 Glenn Braggs and Reggie Sanders each hit two-run homers to enable Cincinnati to beat visiting San Francisco.

"Sanders has some pop in his bat," said manager Lou Piniella. "The secret is to keep him off the DL" Sanders was out July 17 to Aug. 2 with severely bruised ribs. He also missed May 13-29 with a sore hamstring. "When I had that injury, I got weak," Sanders said.

"Then I realized I had to get back to what I was doing in spring training lifting weights and riding the stationary bike." Braves 6, Dodgers 2 Terry Pendleton drove in three runs with a pair of singles and host Atlanta swept to its seventh consecutive victory. Pendleton, who has 10 RBI during his latest eight-game hitting streak, knocked in two runs in Atlanta's three-run first inning and his 69th of the season in a two-run second inning. "I feel comfortable again. I found out what I was doing wrong in San Francisco," Pendleton said. "I had edged too close to the plate."
