ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1945. in tnose freciWes eos sniff at your ivori iry's Summer touch iou'r prcttij hot ntuftt I 'f about the fa 1 -f ANOR EARLY BY I ILLUSTRATION BY iff I jT V' LOUISE ALTSON. it is not a girl's red hair but her freckles that indicate the vitality which men have associated with redheads. A girl may be a platinum blonde or a golden blonde, she may have hair as black as a raven's wing, or she may be just plain carroty the color of her hair, contrary to legend, makes no difference at alL It's her freckles or lack of them that tell the tale. There are a number of peculiar things about freckles.

Lots of people nave them whom you would never suspect of being freckled. Negroes, for instance, are very frequently freckled. It merely happens that freckles on some people are not visible to the naked eye. In clinical opthalmology 4 science of the eye and its diseases), ordinarily invisible freckles ar illuminated by ultra violet rays and very short violet rays. Under this so called "black light" many persons whose skins are apparently white are seen to have dark brown or reddish splotches.

These splotches or freckles (which were formerly called blemishes!) are now considered marks of distinction. And freckles are also an indication of masculine vitality. When the adrenals known as the "glands of life" work overtime, we find a person of buoyant health. Consider, for instance, freckled Van Johnson! Frankie Sinatra 13 also freckled, but not thicklv the BLEMISHES? Not at all, sav the scientists, hut a proof of vitality and real sex appeal! way Van Johnson is. Freckles stick out on Van Johnson, who is 28, the way they do on freckled faced kids of 10 or 12.

Joan Crawford was a freckled faced kid when she was growing up. Myrna Loy has freckles, and so have Katharine Hepburn and Jeanette MacDonald. Clark Gable has freckles and so has Jimmie Stewart. President Roosevelt had freckles. And when Mrs.

Roosevelt was a little girl she was covered with them. They were one of the reasons, she says, why she disliked her looks and grew up with an inferiority complex. She's made up for it since! Another strange thing is that all freckled persons show an extra supply of Vitamin in their systems. Vitamin as the Government food experts The cowslips tall her pensioners be; In their go coats spots you see: Those be rubies, fairy favours In those freckles live their savours. -SHAKESPEARE.

THIS is for all girls who have freckles-girls who, when they were little, stared into the mirror and said to themselves "Oh. those awful freckles." For hundreds of years women have tried to get rid of freckles. Queens of old daubed their faces witth morning dew. Ancient beauticians prescribed saltpeter and glycerin. Our grandmothers mixed borax with rosewater, and washed in sour milk.

In Ireland, runs the legend, there were two famous beauties known as the Gunn Sisters, one of whom had a sprinkling of freckles across the bridge of her nose. One night the freckled Miss Gunn, determined to get rid of the unwanted blemishes, plastered her nose heavily with green vitriol, and the terrible stuff ate her nose away As a matter of fact they now tell us freckles are something to be proud of. "A girl should be pleased with her freckles rather than ashamed of them," says one expert, for instance, Dr. Haden Column, famous Irish gynecologist. "Freckles are proof of vitality and a manifestation of real sex appeal." It was an odd thing how Dr.

Column found out about freckles. of his Irish patients were freckled, and practically all of the freckled married women had numbers of fine, strong babies. The doctor noticed that if a freckled woman stopped having babies, she stopped freckling. He also noticed that the older women became the fewer freckles they had. And the very old ones had hardly any freckles at all, although when they were young they might have been covered with them.

This conclusion of Dr. Column's was the beginning of continued research that has proved, beyond all doubt, that freckled women are definitely more vital than women whose skins are lily-white. We hear a good deal these days about "estrogenic substance," a mysterious something derived from a female hormone which is sometimes used In rejuvenating creams and in costly cosmetics. This sex hormone has been found in freckled girls in large quantities. It has always been thought that redheads make active sweethearts, but now science says ojWTilit, 1945, Kia mim Sritat, Iml tell us, is found in the citrus fruits.

Government scien 1 1 working at an experimental station in jviaryiana, nave y.S proved a close relationship 1 t' between Vitamin and sex- with several aged bulls and some old cows, but they think it would work the same way with humans..
