His selling trips haven't taken him to any orher states. The State Dept. of Development, according to Huffman, should encourage state inventors and home-grown manufacturers. He envisions a commission made up of manufacturers, marketers and other experts to evaluate local patents and to survey and research areas which the lone inventor cannot do. Meanwhile, Huffman cherishes the independence of his one-roan operation. "You can always go home and forget about the thing," he said. JBf DISK MoALFIX A few industries ara being born rlglut under ha nosea of industry-seeking official of Mtat and local government. An example is housed In mall and unpretentious building at 1424 Third NW. It is a one-man industry. He Is Floyd G. Huffman, 69, inventor, manufacturer, salesman, registered land surveyor, master machinist and civil engineer, Huffman, who resides at 2341 VaJencia NE, actually pursues all these livelihoods Began in '61 The Industry part began In April 1961. when the U.S. Patent Office granted him patent number 2,978,276 for a hub he designed to permit the two front wheels of a four-wheel drive vehicle ito turn freely. Unahle to locate the kind of backer he wanted, Huffman began manufacturing the "Huffman Hub" himself. Today lie has 150 dealers in eight states. "When I need money, I get on the road and aell for a couple of weeks," said Huffman. "Then I rush back here and fill itfia orders." At this point, Huffman prefers to keep it a one-man industry. Hard Fight "I've got to admit, though, that it's a hard fight witih a short stick when you'xa by yourself." Huffman looks on his manu facturing as a sideline. His Sudden Bus Jolt Injures Woman An Albuquerque woman suffered slight injuries Friday when a sudden stop by the Albuquerque Transit Sys tem bus in which she was riding threw her head against the back of a seat. Sara Schwartzearth, 1214 Lead SE, was taken to her private physician by an ATS Official after the accident. Bus driver John C. Mc-Neely, 508 Candelaria NW, was forced to stop suddenly, police said, when a car driven bv Bernard J. Conley, Cleveland, Ohio, pulled in front of the bus at 6400 E. Central. None of the t h r e e other passengers aboard the bus reported injuries, police said. prime Mvefllliood is surveying, He is tha official auryayoif for the County of Sandoval. In addition to this, ha does precision machining work In his qulpment packed ma chine shop. He first started thinking of a dura We hub while he was a dealer in Durango, Colo. for a manufacturer of four- wheel drive vehicles. "Some of those hubs wouldn't Gland up under heavy use," said Huffman. Cast aluminum parts can't take it like machined ateel." Machined Steel Huffman Hubs are m chined steel. At $34.95 a pair, Huffman said they are still $20 to $25 cheaper tfian several compet Mors models made of cast metal. There are five or six companies making hubs in the nation. Advantages of using the front wheel hubs, according to Huffman, are that they re duce vibration, make steering easier and save on gasoline. As they come from the factory, lour-wneei drive ve hicles have a device near the driver which disengages the front wheels. Even dlsen gaged, though, the wheels needlessly turn an axle and other parts. Hubs disengage the wheels from the axle and permit them to turn freely. 100 Pairs a Month Huffman makes about 100 pairs of hubs a monttli. The potential, he said, is more than 1000 hubs a month. I believe this hub is good enough to capture 15 to 20 per cent of the hub market," said Huffman. Huffman has dealers in tii A Y7 URUKGS STI1 EA.
