Fourteen ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Getober 7, 1954 Cavernan-Hornet Clash Rated Carlsbad's Weight Edge Offsets Highland's Speed The undefeated Highland Hornets will face their toughest test of the season Friday night when they clash with the brawny Carlsbad Cavemen at Public Schools Stadium in an AA inter -conference game. Highland has cruised to decisive and bruising victories Alamogordo (20-7), St. (13-0) and Las (33-6), Mary's (45-6), Durango, a a a Carisbad used a devastating ground attack to plough under Ysleta, (32-19) and Las Cruces (29-6) before falling to Clovis (20-1) last week. the unbeaten Clovis Wild-, cats, Coach Ralph Bowyer of Carlsbad said, "The best team won.

We didn't poor ball, but we didn't play our best brand either." The Cavemen will be on the rebound and out to regain their prestige when they tackle Highland in what should be a tossup. And Boyer has the power in a team that will outweigh the Hornets by as much as 10 pounds per player. The Cavemen have a potential all-stater in Dave Sherer, a 195-pound fullback, who generates terrific drive through the center of the line. For elusiveness there are halfbacks Wayne Gosnell and Joe Kelly. The Carlsbad forward wall will be anchored.

by John Wooten, 204-pound tackle, who many of experts already feel is a sure thing to win allstate honors. Highland has one weapon to overcome the beefy Carlsbad team--speed. Tailback Antony Gray is the fastest back in the state. He proved that last spring in the State Class A track meet when he won the 100-yard in 10.1, a tenth of a second off his best time for the season. Along with fullback Dewey Bohling, Anthony has sped past opponents at tional rate.

He has scored seven touchdowns, and Bohling, the other half of the scoring combination, has bulled his way to six TDs. Coach Hugh Hackett has been putting the Hornets through gruelling practice sessions this week. Despite chilling winds Wednesday, the Hornets went through a full scrimmage, with deceptive spinning and passing plays out of the single-wing formation. Also considerable time was spent on defense against Carlsbad plays. Hackett listed his tentative starters as: ends Ronnie Whitman and Charles Wood, tackles Tunney Wilson and either Don McLean or Tom Fuller, guards John Garber and Jerry Thomas, and center Voil Lattin.

In addition to Gray and Bohling in the backfield, the other starters are John Mosely and Fred McDowell. FAN FARE by Ditzen IM NOT VERY GOOD -IS YOU ASKED Walt THIS A SMART HORSE THREW FER A SMART ONE 'Willie' Tucker, Who Created UNM Golf Course, Is Dead "The roll of the green" claimed William "Willie" Tucker Wednesday. London-born Tucker, who designed 121 golf courses during his colorful 83-year career, including the North and South layouts of the University, died Wednesday night at the home of his son, Dewitt.

The jauntly little Englishman's last masterpiece was one he never lived to see--the new nine Sylvan Dell course to be constructed this winter 10 miles south of US-66 on NM-10. When duffer missed an easy three-foot putt or an approach shot trickled off the green into one of Willie's sandtraps, Tucker used to say, "Well, that's the roll of the green." But it golfers grew livid with rage when falling victim to Willie's links designs on the course, they couldn't forget his witticism, youth and adherence to details back in the clubhouse. "Mr. Tucker gave Albuquerque more than we aver repaid Conley Turns To Cage Game After Wage Fuss BOSTON (P -Pitcher Gene Conley of the Milwaukee Braves -who is playing basketball as a member of the Boston Celtics -said Wednesday he was "ter. ribly disappointed discouraged" after a four -hour contract talk with Braves General Manager John Quinn in Milwaukee recently.

"Just before I left Milwaukee to come to Boston to try out for the Celtics," the 6-8 pitcher said, "I spent four hours with Mr. Quinn. We talked only baseball and I was terribly disappointed and discouraged." Conley, a 23-year-old athlete, had a 14-9 record for Milwaukee in 1954 and hoped for a good boost to his estimated salary of around $10,000. Although Conley did not disclose any figures, he said he and Milwaukee club officials are "miles apart" regarding money for next year. "Let's not say I'm mad at the Braves," he said "But the way figure is that I know what I did for the team this year and I know what I should be worth to them next year." It is a guess that the Celtics will pay Conley as basketball as the Milwaukee team did for baseball or even a bit more.

Conley is considered a coming hoop star by Boston Celtic Coach Red Auerbach. No Wailing Wall in MadisonWilliamson Sees Wisconsin Whipping Strong Rice Club MADISON, Wis. Lanier is 33 -50 years younger than Tucker -but the two proved a great combination which reached its peak with the ninth International Jaycee Tourney on the UNM course Aug. 14-21. "Mr. Tucker worked a full day Wednesday supervising top dressing for the greens," Lanier stated. "Of course, this wasn't too unusual, as Willie missed but two working days since he joined us in 1941." Willie Tucker, in short, WAS University golfdom.

Tucker was born just outside London in 1871, coming to this country in 1895. His first links endeavor was construction of the now St. Andrews course at Yonkers. N. Y.

This was the first "planned" links layout in the country, coming at the turn of the century. That Tucker became a legend in golf is best shown by a recent request from Florida. One of the top items on Dressen's program is, building up the Washington farm system, one of the weakest in the major leagues. Dressen managed Oakland to the PCL playoff championship this year. "There are two players from that I think are ready for the majors right now," Dressen said. "I hope to bring them to Washington soon." The two men in question are Don Ferrarese, a 25-year-old lefthanded pitcher who won 18 for Oakland, and Jim Marshall, a 22-year-old first baseman' who batted .281 and socked 31 home runs.
