I 5 The Greenwood News oirrmo December 2-8, 1998 Perry Meridian outmuscles Greenwood for the win 1 I )) Is i v'P "Ifs what I call a toughness thing. I don't know that they played any harder than us, they just played tougher' Bruce Hensley Greenwood coach By Jeff Madsen For The Greenwood News Three minutes into the second half of Saturday's season-opener, Indian Creek was on the verge of shocking host Franklin. The Braves under first-year coach Dan Carmony had just shot back-to-back-to-back baskets on the fast break to take a 30-25 lead over the Cubs. Indian Creek was giving Franklin a taste of its own game pressure defense and scoring in transition. But the lesson didn't last long.

Three minutes later the Cubs were back in command with a 38-32 lead en route to a 64-46 triumph. After taking the 30-25 lead, the Braves (0-1) were outscored 39-16 for the remainder of the contest. Franklin evened its record at 1-1 after opening the season with a loss to Center Grove. Franklin senior Justin Paris was a one-man wrecking crew for the Cubs. The 6-3 forward gave the Braves' fits all night.

Paris scored Franklin's first nine points as the Cubs jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Franklin led 11-2 after a slow first quarter. Paris came back with a vengeance in the second half. He scored 12 of Franklin's 23 points in the third quarter, including a crucial 3-pointer that tied the game at 30-30 with 3:40 to play in the period. For the game, Paris connected on seven buckets and hit 12 of 13 free throws for 29 points.

"He was one player that was really active for us," Clark said. "He played like a post player's supposed to play. He faced the basket and went up strong." Paris was held to seven points in the season-opening loss to Center Grove. Senior guard Nick Stainbrook was the only other Cub to hit double figures with 10 points. Clark liked what he saw especially in the second half when the Cubs buried Indian Creek.

"Our kids showed a little something there coming back so quickly from that deficit," Clark said. Franklin's comeback was fueled by a great defensive job on Indian Creek's big gun, Dan Carmony Jr. Carmony gave the Braves their first lead of the game (24-23) when he opened the second half with a 3-pointer. But that was it for Carmony. He failed to score the remainder of the Carmony's brother Wes, Dan Frische and Josh Ratts scored the baskets that put Indian Creek up 30-25.

It was that flurry that has Indian Creek coach Dan Carmony looking forward to good things. "That's how I feel that we're going to be able to play this year," the coach said. "The bad thing was that we didn't go ahead and put them away." "That's the way we want to play. I'll guarantee you we're going to get better."
