CZ The Be3Con Joum3l Saturday. Octet 1. 19S3 Tait has made changes in Cavs' radio and TV setups PETE FRANKLIN on Bill MutMlman't hiring by Minnesota: "Unbelievable. It's the same madness that keens bringing Billy Martin back to the Yankees. Mussel-man back? It's pot so.

He couldn't coach a Hoola Hoop convention. i "I called him my loser of the day. It doesn't get reaction in New York that I'm sure it did in Cleveland Maybe Musselman will bring back Fat Guy Eating Beer Cans. What I really want to know is what's the deal with (Minnesota GM) Bob Stein. What home did they let him out of? Stem said Musselman is a little intense.

A little intense? Yeah, just like Chariot Manson." land or Oberlin, which should blanket the area." This is the first time the Cavs have had their own radio network, and Tait hopes that the various stations will help in promotion of the team with commercials hyping the games. For the first time in his 17 years with the Cavs, Tait won't do every game on radio. Twenty of the 82 contests will be broadcast by Kellman, a Tait protege from Indianapolis. Kellman is a veteran minor-league baseball announcer with the Indianapolis Indians. He also did college basketball for St.

John's in New York. "We switched television stations from WUAB to WOIO (Ch. 19) and that led to a couple of changes," said Tait. "First of all, we have different beer sponsors on radio and television. That means we couldn't simulcast.

Because if you say, 'Hey, let's have Beer then the people from Beer who bought time on radio will be upset. "So that meant we had to have two separate announcing setups." The Cavs and Ch. 19 both wanted Tait WWWE, and those were key games of the playoff drive. "Then four of five playoff games weren't on WWWE. So I ask, why are we leaing WWWE when our most important games weren't even on WWWE? We were heard on WRMR (850-AM) or WDOK (102.1 FM).

Our biggest problem was that our fans didn't know where to find us and we had to do something about that." In Akron, the Cavs will be on WAKR (1540-AM). "That's every game," said Tait. "Our broadcasts will have priority." The same is true of WRMR in Cleveland and 28 other stations across the state, stretching down to Cincinnati. Some Cavs games will even be heard in Erie, and Dunkirk, N.Y. "Not all of the stations in the outlying areas will carry every game," said Tait.

"Some of them have high school and college broadcasts that make them a lot of money and have strong community interest. But in northern Ohio, you can hear our games either in Akron, Cleve on the tube for the added exposure. Chones did the TV games last year, and he'll return to supply the commentary. "So we had to find someone to do the 20 radio games," said TaiL "A lot of people submitted tapes, and Kellman's was the best. I don't think you need a color guy in radio, just television, so Howard will do what I do work the games alone." What about Corrigan, who had been the television voice of the Cavs.

"Jack has a non-compete clause in his contract to do the Indians with WUAB, meaning he can't work for any other television station in this market," said Tait "When we went to Ch. 19, we couldn't use Jack." Tait said that the Cavs left WUAB for two reasons: "First, we did have some conflicts with Indians games, but the main factor was WOIO's offer. It was overwhelming and there was no way we could turn it down. Since WOIO is going to be on most cable outlets, the Cavs games should get strong exposure all over the state." By Terry Pluto Joe Tait is back, but WWVYE is not. Jim Chones is back, but WUAB-TV (Ch.

43) is not. Jack Corn-gan is out and Howard Kellman is in. All of this means that the Cavaliers' approach to radio and television cover- age has changed. List spring, Tait was hired as the Cavs' vice president in charge of broadcasting. Now he will do more than call the games, he will decide how the games will be done and where they will heard and seen.

His biggest move was dumping WWWE, which may not have taken the Cavs into 38 states and half of Canada as the station's commer-r rials claim, but still has the strongest signal in this area. "The problem was that we really I weren't on WWWE," said Tait. "We were treated like an ugly step-sister. We were bumped by the Indians, bumped by the Browns. Ten of our last 11 season games weren't broadcast on NOTEBOOK A first for the Cavaliers will be that the entire 8-game exhibition schedule will be on the radio.

It you want to see the Cavs in preseason, you'd better be ready to drive because the closest game is in Dayton Oct. 26. Other games are in such glamour spots as Jonesboro. and Fayetteville, N.C. It will be interesting to see how the combination of Tait and Chones works on television.

Tait's style is pure radio who has the ball, what is the score and what players are on the floor. That's a change from Corrigan, who mixed quite a bit of analysis with his play-by-play. It also was obvious that Chones and Corrigan were fighting for mike time and seemingly trying to see who could come across more like the expert. Also look for Chones to tone down some of his criticism of officials, which is a bad habit that plagues most rookie announcers. Dickinson, 38, the wife of former PGA Tour player Gardner Dickinson, had six birdies and a bogey. Mlssle Berteottl was alone in second place with a 68. Dickinson missed the cut In last week's LPGA tournament, the Santa Barbara Open, and nearly withdrew from the San Jose tournament because of a sore back. "The warm weather is good for me," she said after the opening round. She also credited her husband for giving some helpful advice in a telephone conversation.

Behind Dickinson and Berteotti was a group of nine at 69, including Nancy Lopez and Amy Al-cott, who rank second and fifth, respectively, on this year's LPGA money-winning list. The season's leading money-winner, Sherri Turner has collected $345,609 so far this year. First-place money this weekend is $45,000, making it possible for Lopez, who is at $318,452, to reach the top spot. Two of Berteotti's birdies came on putts of 16 and 20 feet on the final two holes. She was surprised with her success, she said, because she was playing with a new set of clubs she got to replace a recently stolen set.

More golf Jeff Sluman shot a 3-under-par 67 to hold off a charge by Leonard Thompson for a 2-shot lead after the second round of the $400,000 Southern Open in Columbus, Ga. Sluman, who captured the PGA championship six weeks ago, shot an opening-round 63 and was at 130, 10-under-par over the par-70, Green Island Country Club course. Thompson matched the 63 with a string of eight birdies including four in a row to close in on Sluman at 132 after a first-round 69. Bert Yancey broke 70 for the first time this year and tied Dick Hendrickson and George Lan-ning for the first-round lead in the $300,000 Seniors Challenge in Roswell, Ga. Yancey, who qualified for the Seniors Tour when he passed his 50th birthday in August, shot a 4-under-par 68.
