TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1994 LOS ANGELES TIMES JACKSON: Lobbyist Gets 61-Year Term Continued from A1 Heller, saying that to allow him extra time "would only delay the inevitable." "As far as I'm concerned this case has run its course," Garcia said, noting that Jackson "received a fair trial." Before being whisked away by federal marshals, the 6-foot-6inch, blue-suited Jackson declined to make a statement to Garcia and a courtroom jammed with his friends, family, lobbying associates and other supporters. Heller predicted that an appellate court will release Jackson, 50, and order: a new trial, saying the government, with the help of forSen. Alan Robbins (D- Van Nuys), had entrapped the kingpin lobbyist, whose firm once earned $2 million a year from an array of blue chip clients- -more than any other in the Capitol. "The system of justice my view has gone out of control in the effort to clean up corruption, so to speak, in the California Legislature," said Heller, who expressed surprise that his client was immediately taken into custody. Defendants in all the other capital corruption cases were given time to report to prison and some were allowed to remain free pending the outcome of their appeal.

Jackson, who lived in Mill Valley and practiced law in San Francisco, also faces loss of his attorney's license. Prosecutor Vincent made it clear that the federal corruption probe, begun a decade ago, is ongoing. Eleven other Capitol figures, including Robbins and former state Sen. Joseph B. Minimalist Art 10-unit floor piece and the pected juxtapositions of color recent painted wall pieces all ect the idea of Judd as an innovator who pushes the limits of a genre. 'A new, untouchably gorgeous work of anodized aluminum copper confronts us with the sual aspects of an artist who long chafed against his minimalist label," she wrote.

Judd also designed furniture, ginning with items for his children. That, too, was an outlet for unique style of art. "All natural wood and right angles, Judd's tables chairs are designed for the rather than the body," commented Times writer Kristine McKenna when Judd exhibited his furniture at Angles Gallery in Santa Monica in 1985. "His pristine, cerebral objects are more concerned exploring the idea of a chair they are in providing a place to one's weary bones." Born in Excelsior Springs, Judd served in the Army the Korean War, working on design and construction team. later studied painting at the Students League.

Judd, who had homes in Manhattan, Marfa, and in Switzerland, died Saturday in New York City of lymphoma. The artist preferred to work with solid geometric forms and was best known for his repetitive outsize boxes of stainless steel or plexiglass. He refused to call his -form sculpture, claiming that word implied carving when his objects were factory built.

He also disliked the word minimalist, preferring to call himself an empiricist. "He is one of the crucial figures of the '60s generation. It is impossible to think of American art of that period without him," said Elizabeth C. Baker, editor of Art in America. After studying philosophy at Columbia University, Judd was an abstract Expressionist painter in the 1950s, then moved to sculpture in 1963.

"The people I learned from were Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko," Judd told The Times in 1984. "I learned in a very remote way. My work doesn't really resemble theirs, but I learned from them and there's no excess there. That's certainly clear." Judd was known not only as an artist but as an outspoken art critic and defender of his work. "Everybody who defends their work is going to get in trouble," he once told The Times.
