1 0 Akron Beacon Journal Thursday. August 22. 1 985 TELEVISION i.WMLBM.1111 IIW IIIIIIWW New chief old hand at what makes WUAB-Ch. 43 tick with his station holding tightly to its "king of the independents" crown. Still, the field became a little more crowded in May when WOIO-Ch.

19 joined WUAB and WCLQ-Ch. 61 in the Cleveland independent battle. The hew station debuted strongly, and Schuch knows his first priority is to keep Chan-" nel 43 in the No. 1 spot. "The competition doesn't bother me," he said during a telephone interview from his WVTV office.

"I feel good about it. The adrenalin is flowing. Look, it either brings out the best in you or you get out of the business. If anything, the competition is stronger here in Milwaukee. And I don't want it to seem as if the independents are our only competition.

All the stations are after" as big a share of the audience as they can get." Coming out of the sales end of the broadcast business, Schuch has spent 16 years at WVTV. During that time he rose from account executive to local sales manager to national sales manager to general sales manager to assistant general manager to general manager. Even though Cleveland and its competitive television market are new to Michael A. Schuch, he's quite prepared to take over as vice president and general manager of the area's most successful independent station, WUAB-Ch. 43.

The 42-year-old Chicago native has spent the last four years as the vice president and general manager of WVTV-Ch. 18, the Milwaukee station that, like WUAB, is owned by Gaylord Broadcasting. "I feel very comfortable about going over to Channel 43 because the two stations are so similar," said Schuch, who was named WUAB's general manager last Thursday. fact, I've been doing a lot of thinking about the similarities. We do a lot of the same things.

"Both stations are strong independents (not owned by or affiliated with a network). They both have excellent film libraries. And they're both heavily into sports. We have the Bucks, a basketball team that was exciting to watch last season. WUAB has the Cavs, a team that got hot last season.

17-county area and 7 of the people watching TV. That's down slightly from' Channel 43's May figures (39), but WOIO also slipped (l4 compared -to May's 25). The July book, however, doesn't carry much weight. That's because good' weather keeps people outside and drops the viewing levels to yearly lows. In the hotly contested 6 p.m.

local' news race, WJKW-Ch. 8 experienced its annual summer drop, placing second (1429 to WEWS-Ch. 5 (17357c). NBC-owned WKYC-Ch. 3's hour-long newscast continued to be a distant (612).

Rounding out the 6 p.m. race were. Alice on WUAB (48), One Day at a Time on WOIO (23) and WAKR-Ch. 23's local report (1. 2).

WJKW's news won narrow victories at noon (931 to WEWS 930)J and 11 p.m. (1531 to WEWS' 15 30 and WKYC's 1121). NBC's prime time on WKYC outdis-t tanced ABC on WEWS and CBS Ofl WJKW. "I don't have any grand plan to get there and completely turn everything upside-down," he said. "It's incumbent on me to get my feet wet and see what has been working.

We're the team to beat, and it's going to stay that way." There were hints, however, of what could change at Channel 43. "The business has changed," Schuch said. "You've got to make sure you're budgeting enough for promotion. You have to be i willing to spend money in that area. It's an important area and, coming out of sales, I feel good instincts there.

"It can never be business as usual. You always have to put what you're doing under a microscope." WUAB's general manager will be arriving to some good news. The July Arbitral ratings book showed Channel 43 with a comfortable edge over hot newcomer Channel 19. Measuring the average total audience for each day of the ratings period, Arbitron's figures showed WUAB with 2 of the 3.6 million TV homes in the Mark Dawidziak "We have the Brewers, a baseball team that's going through a losing season. WUAB carries the Indians, a team having a bad season.

We carry Big 10 basketball. WUAB carries Ohio State basketball. Soccer will be new to me. The Force is the big addition." Schuch, who plans to start at Channel 43 during the first week of September, replaces Jack Moffitt, the extremely popular 38-year Cleveland broadcasting veteran who announced in July that he was leaving to become the general manager of KTHT-Ch. 67, a new station in Houston.
