Thursday 997 South DAILY JOURNAL ASSISTANT NEWS ECHTOfi A 65-year-old Franklin woman was bilked out of $1,000 Wednesday in a "pigeon drop" scam, police ported. The woman told police she was in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Franklin at 12:30 p.m. when a younger woman approached her with a large wad of cash. The woman told the victim she had just Seen a man drop the money. -Another man approached and said lie witnessed the same thing.

Franklin Det. Rick Sharp said the two suspects suggested to the vie-. tim that they split the money three tyays. The female suspect told the victim she worked in a downtown Franklin law office, and would ask her attorney employer what to do. The suspects then talked the woman into putting up her own money as "security" for the found cash.

The female suspect rode with the victim to Mutual Building and Loan, where the victim withdrew $1,000 from her account and gave it to the suspect. They next drove downtown, where the victim waited an the car while the suspect got out 'with the $1,000 and the wad of cash, -claiming she was going to the law Office. The 65-year-old woman waited for a whil4, then went to the law "office herself. No one fitting the description of the suspect worked 4here or had been there earlier, said." Realizing she had been deceived (by the suspects, the victim called police. Detectives believe the wad "of cash twas never lost, and the suspects displayed it as a set-up to lure the victim.

Police are asking for the public's help in solving! the The female suspect is white, in her mid-30s, 5-feet-5-inches tall, 150 pounds with light brown or blonde shoulder length hair, was wearing a bright-colored top and dress slacks, and spoke with a southern accent. The woman identified herself as "Sandy Adams," but that name is believed to be an alias. The male suspect, known only as "William," is white, 5-feet-6-inches tall, 160 pounds, with blond hair combed back and a thin mustache, lie was wearing dress pants, a dress shirt and some type of sports team jacket. This is the first time the "pigeon drop" scam has been reported to Franklin police, Sharp said, although it has been common for several years in other cities. Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Franklin police detectives at 736-3670.

Rape charge weighed Prosecutors have not decided whether to charge a 16-year-old Franklin boy as an adult in an alleged rape. The youth was arrested Tuesday night and detained in the Johnson County Juvenile Center on a rape charge. A 15-year-old Franklin girl reported the teen lured her into his home and forced her to have sex against her will. If he is charged as an adult with rape, the boy's name will become public record and he would face six to 20 years in prison if convicted. If convicted as a juvenile, he could not be detained beyond age 21.
