2S OP) The New Mexico Military Institute Bronco won the football championship of New Mexico Thursday, by virtue of a 7 to 7 tie with the New Mexico Agglei. The Broncos reigned a champs of New Moxlco gridirons last year. The Broncos, swept somewhat by overconfldence, and the Aggie fired with determln- atlon to win, produced a pair of evenly matched teams. In the college standing In New Mexico on this closing day of the football season, the Bronco head the list with one game tied and no defeats. The New Mexico Aggies rank second with two games tied and no defeats anj the University of New Mexico ranks third with one game tied and one defeat.

The first period here Thursday was played almost entirely In Institute territory, and the Aggies shoved over the first score In the opening of the second period. LImbough took eighteen yards off the Bronco end as the first period ended and the Aggies had the ball In the opening of the second period deep In Bronco territory. The tie was moral victory for the Lobos. A crowd of nearly 6,000 fren-tled spectators wer kept on their feet during the last five mlnutea of play as the Lobos pushed across their touchdown and Crist sent hie place kick like a bullet straight between the uprights to tie the score. The crowd kept on Its feet when Lombard, made desperate by the fact that a sure victory had been snatched frorr.

A fight that topped countless Lombard drives deep within their own territory.

A fight that made them keep on fighting after Lombard had thought they had conclusively proved their defense wa like a stone wall. Lombard made 12 first downs to even for the Lobos but six times the scarlet-clad figures lost the tall on downs as they tried to advance through the New Mexico line for a touchdown. The Illinois tam had the hall Inside the Iiobo 35 jard line six times during the game. The Illinois team scored first In the third quarter. They had recovered a fumbled punt by Brown en the Lobo SO yard line.

Two assaults on the Una resulted In no gain. Then Ballou got under a 80 yard pass from Lewis which he caught In the end zone. Nichols kicked goals to give Lombard a 7-0 advantage. In Thrw Minutes The Lobos scored their touchdown with less than three minutes left of the playing time. Brown had got off a beautiful pass to Peery and the Lobo end kicked and clawed his way through five tackier to make a total gain of IT yards.

The hall was near the side line. Wlllson took stab at the line on a side line sneak. He wrenched, himself free from a Lombard back near the line of scrimmage after his own line had made a beautiful hole for him, and charged down the field for a gain of 18 yards to plant the hall on the Iomhard yard line. Wlllson hit right guard for five yards on the next play. Brown drove through the left side of the line for three more and Jimmy made it first down on the Scarlet four yard line.

Hector Moar hit right tackle to plant the ball six inches from the goal line. Wlllson carried the ball through center on the next two plays, but ran Into a stone wall of red Jersles each time. On th last down, Brown followed perfect Interference around left end and dove over the line with a tackier hanging on his legs. Crist converted to tie the score. Strong Hod Attack With a line every bit as strong as the Lobo forward wall, and a fast backfleld led by Mercer and Lewis, the Lombard team presented a running attack that waa the strongest the Lobos have had to stop this year.

liut each time the Lombard team nca.red the Lobo goal line, they were stopped short. The whole Lobo line would become a raging mass of charging beef that would break through the Lombard forwards and smear plays before they got well started, the New Mexico hacks were swarming everywhere. The Lobos were fighting to redeem themselves for an otherwise discouraging season. Having failed to win a single game from a worthy opponent this season, the Lobo fought their powerful foe, champions of the Little Nineteen conference of Illinois, to a tie that tamped their mettle on the minds of the cheering crowd and made their season a success. Missed Opportunity Shortly before l'red Brown had crossed the Lombard goal line with the touchdown that tied the score, the Lobos had missed another opportunity.

Wlllson had passed 20 yards to Feery to carry the ball deep Into Lombard territory.
