For Delaware Park meeting Morning News, Wilmington, Del. Friday, May 28, 1971 53 uriday racin urs By KARL FELDNER Delaware Park is receiving nominations in record number to its 1971 stakes events, and although management expresses surprise, trainer Brian Murray does not. "It figures," said Mrray, who saddled Prince Siena to win the Christiana Stakes at the track at Stantion last year. "And, of course, the reason is Sunday racing. "I can tell you it is a definite lure to New York horsemen and I think you'll find many of them on hand on Sundays." MURRAY qualifies in this regard himself.

Most of his racing is done on the major New York circuit, while he ships to other tracks for certain races, such as he did to the Fair Hill, Races last week. Delaware Park officially opens its 34th racing season tomorrow and it will race until July 5, Sundays included, with Tuesdays "dark." The second half of the split meeting will run from Aug. 21 through Sept. 26, again featuring Sundays. It was Delaware Park which spurred the drive to horse racing, with pari-mutuel betting, on the Sabbath, although Dover Downs was first out of the gate with it, with Brandywine Raceway running second.

However, the fact that Delaware Park will be the only 'game' around on Sunday afternoon is surely going to help it for the present." Murray says the fact that most of the Stanton track's stakes events have been transferred to Sunday is the reason for the overwhelming nominating response. He believes it gives horse men a better place to "pick their spots" with their stock. TOMORROW'S opening feature is the $25,000 added Wilming-torn Handicap, a six-furlong sprint revived for the first time since 1963, and it has drawn Racing Secretary Larry Abbundi's approval as "the best stakes sprint of the year, anywhere." Two of the candidates for tomorrow's opener had short workouts on the fast track. Delestino Dilibero's topweighted Lion Sleeps (126 pounds) breezed three furlongs in a casual Walter D. Fletcher's Foggy Road was caught in :34 2-5.

On Sunday, it will be the 1 1-16-mile Brandywine Turf Handicap, which drew 59 nominations, including that of W. Arnold Hangar's Sir Earl, who won his division of the Valley Forge Turf Handicap at Garden State. Sir Earl is topweighted at 126 pounds. MRS. Henry Obre's North Flight, an impressive winner on both dirt and grass courses this year, is expected to be the starting topweight under 120 pounds in Sunday's race.

Others expected to start Sunday include N.L. Cohen's Mister Diz, 117 pounds; Hickory Tree Stable's Favorecidian, A-Dee Farm's Jaradara and Anthony Bonuomo's Tudor Reward, all 115; Briardale Farms' Stop Time, 114; Anderson Fowler's Laplander, 113; Stephen C. Clark, Shadow Brook, 111 Mrs. William Coxe Wright's Goodtobegone, and Mrs. John L.

Greer's Mr. Brogann, 108; Lawrence M. Gelb's Palestine and Leo R. Fink's Say Not So, 106. The Monday, Memorial Day attraction is another turf event, the Open Fire Stakes, at 1 1-16-miles for 3-year-old fillies.

The Open Fire is named after Brandywine Stables' race mare, who won the Delaware Handicap in 1966. N.Y horsemen top Atlantic City roundup ITH-UNO Pace: Ent ries Pace: Black Arrow A (Y.
