Making his first pitching appearance since a sore knee grounded him two weeks ago, the Phillies' ace uncorked five dazzling and easy innings against the Detroit Tigers. SHORT, the first PhiUie to pitch that far, left with a 1-0 lead. The Red Hats built it to 2-0, but they blew the game 4-2 in the ninth inning on the wildness of rookie pitcher Lowell Palmer and a juicy error on shortstop by Don Money. The 31-year-old left-hander allowed the world champions only two hits. One was a line double ting of Johnson pleased Manager Bob Skinner.

The showing of Palmer was something else. Johnson drove in both runs. The Irrepressible Ron Stone, Cookie Rojas and the third baseman all singled off Earl Wilson for a first-inning lead. In the sixth, against John Wyatt, Johnson unloaded his second home run of the Grapefruit League season. That was the last of the Phils' five hits.

AL Kaline's homer off Dick Farrell in the seventh was the Tigers' first run. Otherwise, Farrell was effective in his three innings. The Tigers tied the score against Palmer in the ninth on two singles and a walk, and it would have ended there had not Money booted a ground ball with two out to load the bases on balls. by Al Kaline in the first inning that whizzed by Deron Johnson's upraised glove at third base. The other was a rolling single to right field by Norm Cash in the fourth.

Short had the big pro-Detroit crowd of 2,918 looking up in the air most of the time. He threw six infield pop-ups. He walked nobody, struck out two and had three 1-2-3 innings. AND this was the Short who had his right knee in a cast last week after straining ligaments in the second exhibition game. "I felt as if I could go nine," he said later.

"Those were easy innings. The knee tightened up a couple of times, but it didn't hurt. I threw about four pitches about as hard as I'm capable of." Short's pitching and the hit "Palmer can't pitch like that, wild and always behind in the count," said Skinner, frowning. "I'm a little worried about him. I've never seen him pitch well from the stretch position." The hard-throwing Californian is a possible fifth starter, or W3S.
