Last week I visited with a man who for the last eight years had worked at one of our National Parks as the assistant manager of a hotel. His wife worked in one of the gift shops as a sales lady. He earned $125 a month and she earned $85 with meals included and a parking space for their trailer. Not bad. Retired folks and college students are the great summer work force for the concessioners at most National Parks.

Every year more and more retirees are being hired for these seasonal jobs. I have been told that retirees do a better job than most folks who apply for summer work. The variety of work is numerous. In Yellowstone there are more than 80 different classifications, everything from night cafeteria to hotel manager. The better jobs go to folks who have had some experience, are mature, and enjoy good references.

Many opportunities also exist in the housekeeping department. These jobs include the linen room inspectress, seamstress, maids, cleaners, and trict attorney in the state Morris Stagner of Curry-Roosevelt counties of your heart. Most important, you should be in good health. Many of our parks are in elevations above 4000 feet and if the altitude bothers you, try to find one in the South or East. If you decide to try for a job, you should plan to stay the full season.

Nothing is more irritating to the concessioners than to have someone leave in the middle of the season when replacements are almost impossible to find. This is usually not a problem with retirees because they are used to being responsible and considerate of their employer. The best part of this arrangement, in my opinion, is that if you like the work, surroundings, and people you meet, you can go back year after year. Concessioners like this arrangement because they don't have to keep looking for new people all the time. I'm told that retirees who have done this are most enthusiastic.

From the Mickey Mouse beginning, Disney fashioned an empire of fantasy and entertainment that spanned every barrier of language and race. In an era when many producers concentrated on sex and violence he created simple tales that were fit for the whole family and had happy endings. Last year Disney wrote his stockholders: "We're interested in doing things that are fun in bringing pleasure and especially laughter to people." No man has ever succeeded so fully in doing just that. The world is indeed a poorer place now. These are slender reeds, hardships there." Schwartz said the greatest fear he has is that the youngsters will regard him as "something other than what I represent." He said he worries about the fact youngsters might consider a convict some sort of hero.

"But many of them tell me afterward that they see things in a different light," he said. "And I have one advantage. I can talk to them, and they will listen to me, when often their parents can't do this." Sanchez is well satisfied with the results, both with Schwartz and with Isted and Points, and said police officers, school officials and probation officers feel the project is worthwhile. Sanchez is quick to point out that recent Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics show the highest crime rate affects the 16-year-old age group. He adds that in 45 minutes, in a single school assembly, he can reach 1000 youngsters in approximately this age group.

The point of the Uglich story is that it is the home of one of the first state-owned enterprises, a watch factory, to take part in Moscow's experiment with the hated capitalist system.

At present 673 industrial plants, including the one at Uglich, are taking part in this economic reform program. The new system grants more autonomy to individual managers and measures their performance in terms of sales and profits instead of fulfillment of arbitrary production quotas. Results to date have encouraged the Kremlin. In the first nine months of this year, the 673 factories raised their total production by 11 per cent over the comparable period of 1965. In addition, the plants recorded profit increases of 20 per cent and labor productivity rose 8 per cent.
