TELEVISION I TELEVISION A Gem Adorns Lineup of New Shows Key to Channel Numbers: AL Albuquerque, RR Rio Rancho, SF Santa Fe, LA Los Alamos SC Sierra Cable Over-the-AIr Channels Cable Systems (Commentary FROM JOURNAL WIRE REPORTS "Is this a test, or is this real?" That is the mantra of "Middle Ages," which, despite the title's implication, is a contemporary comedy-drama that premiered this past week on CBS and continues through Oct. 1. It's the sort of question a man like Walter Cooper begins asking himself on hitting 1 middle age in the 1990s. MIDDLE AGES THURSDAYS AT 9 P.M. ON CHANNEL 13 As played by Peter Riegert, appliance CBS "Hearts Mondays.

John Ritter is top aide to a buffoonish Southern senator and Markie Post is a muckraking reporter who ends up sharing his D.C. apartment. Premieres Sept. 14. "The Hat Wednesdays.

Black fedoras are the trademark of a three-man special-crimes unit in the latest cop drama from Stephen J. Cannell Based on a real-life Los Angeles P.D. squad of the 1940s. Premieres Sept. 16.

"Frannle's Saturdays. Frannie is a frumpy garment-district seamstress fed up with catering to her pampered clan. The show's producers are Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner Premieres Sept. 13. "Angel Saturdays.

Two female homicide detectives an ambitious Black woman (Robin Givens) and a street-smart Polish-American (Pamela Gidley) are uneasy partners in this "Cagney and drama in Chicago. Premieres Sept. 15. NBC "Secret Sundays. A reality-based series offering dramatizations of cases from the files of the U.S.

Secret Service. Hosted by Steven Ford, son of former President Gerald Ford. Premiered Aug. 16. FOX "The Thursday s.Producer Aaron Spelling Hills, spins a drama of a group of working-class friends who form a neighborhood rock band.

Premiered Aug. 27. Thursdays. Stand-up comic Martin Lawrence plays a radio talk-show host who dishes some baaad bravado on the air but is squishy and insecure in his personal relationships. Premiered Aug.

27. "Likely Fridays. In this comic whodunnit, Detective Marshak (Sam McMurray) treats the viewer as his own bumbling rookie partner. Premieres Friday. "Flying Sundays.

This sitcom is about an earnest college grad (Corey Parker) who labors as a marketing assistant by day but cultivates a circle of hipper friends and lovers by night. Premieres Sept 13. a question raised by the critics and other viewers who happen to find "Middle Ages" captivating. That's because it is one of those limited-run series the networks have been dumping on the air lately. Even when one of these series proves good, such stand-ins may swiftly vanish, never to be seen again.

So, currently scheduled to run for only four more weeks, is "Middle Ages" a test? Or might it blossom into a real, open-ended series? Dare you fall in love with it, or is this to be just an early fall fling? Here are the networks' other new shows that are already on the air or can be expected in the next two weeks: ABC "Going to Tuesdays. The creators of "Northern Exposure" switch climates in this off-beat drama about students at a medical school in the Caribbean. Premiered Tuesday. Thursdays. Delta Burke is a bored wife who bolts her domestic nightmare to become a country-western singer.

She finds a niche instead at a CW bar run by Earl Holliman. Premieres Sept. 15. "Covington Saturdays as of Sept 19. A whimsical adventure series set in 14th-century England in which Nigel Terry Lion in plays a widowed father of four spirited heirs with 20th-century attitudes.

Premiered Aug. 25. Saturdays. Robert Urich For and Dalton James are guilty absentee father and rebellious prodigal son trying to make up for lost time by hitting the road on motorcycles. Premieres Sept.

What he and those around him don't have is certain answers. It's the story of people who are a little sadder, maybe more than a little wiser, yet somewhere in their hearts still carry a poster professing that "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." Anxious but hopeful, "Middle Ages," in its own way, is perhaps television's only adult series. In addition to Riegert, the cast includes William Russ, James Gammon, Ashley Crow, Michael O'Keefe, Kyle Secor and Amy Brenneman. "Is this a test or is this real?" might also be Bill Slips Past Jaguar, Retrieves Treasure running out and whisks Eleni off to the Spaulding yacht before Frank can tell her the truth. When Eleni says she is not ready to have a child, Alan-Michael simply replaces her birth control pills with fake ones.

Each of these (900) calls costs 95 cents per minute. GENERAL HOSPITAL Holly, Bill and Paloma escape from Santiago's men and find the catacomb where Paloma has hidden the jaguar statue. Although the entrance is guarded by a live jaguar, Bill manages to elude the killer cat and retrieve the treasure. But before they can make their escape, Martin shows up with gun in hand. Bill lunges for the gun and after a brief struggle, Martin ends up dead.

Scotty and Dom wake up in a Las Vegas hotel to discover they are married. This week: Marco and Tracy talk turkey. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL -Ganz is about to rape Felicia when Sly bursts in, followed by Zach. Once Ganz has been subdued, Zach considers turning him over to the police, but soon realizes he can't because Ganz would then rat on Jack for killing Ratchet. Sheila's contemplating pushing Brooke over the balcony and letting everyone believe it was a suicide, but Eric's return to the condo prevents her from doing so.

This week: Sally tries to understand Jack. ANOTHER WORLD Kevin accuses Jake of having concocted the story about Kevin being a murderer to cover up the fact that Jake is responsible for the Jamie and Kelsey video tape. Kevin also warns Jake that it's just a matter of time before Jake loses Paulina. Meanwhile, Paulina comes across some taped footage of Jamie and Kelsey that is marked as Jake's personal property. This week: Kelsey and Frankie dig in.

ALL MY CHILDREN Edmund tells Brooke he's convinced Flora will not rest until he takes what is rightfully his from Dimitri. When Angelique asks Dimitri if it's all over between them, Dimitri vows he will honor their marriage commitment. After Lucas proposes marriage to Livia, she scurries to San Francisco to declare her love for Tom. Joe reports that Mona's surgery is going smoothly. Erica's so grateful that she vows to become the ultimate daughter to Mona.

The doctor recognizes them and calls the police, who get in touch with Kevin. Luckily a nurse at the clinic agrees to hide Lee Ann, Jason and the baby. Once the coast is clear, Jason tries to collect his pay from the diner owner.

When the owner refuses to pay up, Jason eyes the cash register. This week: Jason takes matters into his own hands. GUIDING LIGHT Holly blasts both Ross and Roger for getting involved with women that are young enough to be their daughters. Stavros opens that envelope Musette left and discovers a letter inside for Frank. After Frank reads it, he learns the truth about why Eleni left him in Paris.

Alan-Michael realizes time is INSIDE TV MOVIES 11 Day-by-day list of TV movies 1 2 CHANNEL CHANGE NOTICES KKTO, (over-the-air) Channel 2, will cease programming as of midnight Sunday.
