Santa Fe station KKSS, FM-97, also went on the air with an adult contemporary format geared toward the same listening group. All the new stations, without exception, claim they are offering an alternative to KOB, and they maintain KOB has never been seriously challenged until now. "I welcome them to the market place the more the merrier!" said Doug Stewart, general sales manager for KOB AM and FM. "Everybody in town wants to take a run at us.

We welcome the competition." KOB FM and AM has been rated first and second respectively for the last three years, according to the Arbitron ratings book. That rating is based on the stations' overall share of the total radio listening audience over age 12. KOB FM had a total market share of 16.7 percent, according to the last Aribitron book, while the AM captured 14.2 percent. Except for one rating book when KOB AM slipped from second to fourth place, the stations' success has not waivered during the last few years. KOB-FM operates under 100,000 watts and the AM under 50,000.

Stewart said the only truly "full-service" radio station in the Albuquerque market is KOB AM, which features hourly and half-hourly news, sports and weather updates 24-hours a day. The FM features only "good news" in a capsulized format, and then only during morning and evening drive time. KOB's general manager, Art Schreiber, said Albuquerque now has as many radio stations as much larger markets. "This bodes well not only for the state, but also for the listeners." and simple and we won't yuck-it-up so much. We'll let the music be the star," he said.

KKHJ will offer news in the morning between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., and hourly weather reports around the clock. Both stations will be on the air 24 hours and will broadcast their signals over 100,000 watts. Skip KKHJ's production director, predicted that by the station's third ratings book, "we'll have sliced KOB's numbers in half." The station's general manager, Dean Burns, was more realistic, saying "we'd like to be rated number 1, but we'll be happy if we're rated in the top 5 in the Albuquerque market." Ms. Towle was also confident that KIVA would eventually be the number-1 rated station, although she declined to give a timetable for.

The AM station will remain local and continue, using an adult contemporary format. KTVA and KKHJ are not alone in their attempts to wrest some of the listening audience from KOB. In September, Albuquerque radio station KMGA, FM-99, formerly KZZX, changed ownership, and using an adult Two more radio stations have jumped into the market in an attempt to get a slice of the very large pie held by KOB-FM. KIVA, and KKHJ, FM-98, are going after roughly the same audience to which KOB appeals, and the stations are using variations of the adult contemporary format, also used by KOB. Representatives of both KIVA and say their music formats will be successful because they've conducted audience research to determine what type of music listeners want.

"Our listeners want to hear more of the hot hits that are popular around the United States," said KIVA station manager Brenda Towle. "The listeners are telling us they want to hear more music. They want news updates and community involvement." KIVA is obliging, Ms. Towle said. The station, which has been on the air since mid-September, is offering morning drive time news, weather and sports, with traffic reports every quarter-hour.

Updates are made at intervals throughout the day. The station will also offer a telephone ski line, to give callers snow' conditions for ski areas in New Mexico and Colorado. The station is also committed to a format of playing five or more songs in a row without interruption. Gary Marshall, programming director of KKHJ which will officially go on the air about Nov. 1 said the station's research shows that listeners want more music and less chit-chat.

A judge has barred the sale of a private collection of paintings by artist Georgia O'Keeffe until experts determine whether the works valued at $5 million are of "museum quality." The 15 paintings were bequeathed by Ms. O'Keeffe's sister, Anita O'Keeffe Young, to a foundation named after Mrs. Young's late husband.

The Robert R. Young Foundation donated one of the paintings to an unidentified museum and decided to sell the others through Sotheby's Inc. of New York at a Dec. 5 auction. But Sotheby's questioned whether the sale would violate the terms of the will left by Mrs.
