For the Journal Rio Rancho expects to compete in 76 American Legion baseball games this summer to sharpen its attack for another run at the Class AAAA title next year. The Rams, whose 25-man roster includes freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, will play both A and division schedules offered by the league. They'll be hitting the diamond nearly every day between now and Aug. 5, when the season draws to a close. Head coach Ruben Lardizabal, the Rams' assistant coach during the regular prep season, said Wednesday the team chose to be on the go.

"We want to play as much as we can," he said. "Our sights are set on the championship." The Rams took second place in District 5AAAA last season and advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals. They're willing to make sacrifices to accomplish their goal, Lardizabal said. "The players want to get as much experience as possible," he said. "We also have things we want to get done." The Rams' top priority is to develop their pitching staff.

Steve Solwick, who will be a senior, was Rio Rancho's only ace. "We can't have him take on the load again next year," said Lardizabal. "To win state, you have to have at least two or three starters."
