City Cougars Plan to Be Nasty Babe Ruth Hosts By JERRY McDAMEL GUARDANAPO SAID, We've got some others who have been doing fantastic jobs for us, including third-baseman Rick Taddy; outfielder Cass Anaya; and Ray Sanchez, another outfielder. Sanchez has really come along. He's really been hitting in our last four games." Guardanapo, who along with Phil Lopez handles coaching duties for Cougar Manager Ray Otero, feels Albuquerque is definitely a contender. "We've got the hitters, we've got good pitching, and I think we have the best infield of any team in the Series. If we win that first game, and get the momentum, I think we'll go all the way." WINNING THAT first game is going to be rough.

The Cougars go up against four-time world champion New Orleans at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Bayou visitors compiled a tourney record of 11-1 on the way to Albuquerque, including four wins in the regional tournament at Carlsbad in which they surrendered only one run. New Orleans right-hander Neal Comarda shut out Lubbock 4-0 in the regional final, giving up only three hits in the process. And Guardanapo ways the LouLsianans have two other pitchers who have been even more impressive.

"THE HAVE a real good pitcher named Adrian Alvarez who pitched two shutouts down at Carlbad. He's got a good curve, and a very fast fast-ball. And they have a left-hander, Ron Chauffe, who is also very impressive. They run a lot, steal bases, they bunt these are the things e're going to have to watch. They're a well-coached team." The New Orleans power-man is Don Pecoraro, who had two singles and a double for a 3-for-4 performance against Lubbock.

Guardanapo said, "He always goes 3-for-4. He hits the inside pitch, the outside pitch, the high pitch, the low pitch. There's no way to pitch to him, you've just got to hope he misses the ball sometime." Getting Pecoraro to miss the ball will be up to pitchers Romero. Duran and Martinez. If they can get the job done, the host team might be on its way.

And that's no way to treat a guest. Eight regional champions from throughout the United States converge on Albuquerque today in quest of the Babe Ruth World Series championship. They'll find two things of particular interest to them. One, pleasant: Albuquerque Sports Stadium, one of the finest baseball facilities in the nation. Two, and not quite so pleasant: the Albuquerque Cougars, the series host team.

HOST TEAMS are not usually something to be feared by powerful regional champions. They have a much easier route to the Series. While al! the other teams have been putting it on the line in state and regional tournaments, the Cougars haven't really fired a shot in anger since winning the host role in a three-game play-off with the Albuquerque Cheetahs July 16-18. The Cougars feel they are not the run of the mill host team. They think they can win it all.

Will the long layoff hurt? Cougar Coach Dave Guardanapo doesn't think so. "The layoff will probably help us. The boys had just finished a heavy regular season schedule, then right into the playoffs, and they were getting pretty tired. But they're looking real good now, better than when we got them." GUARDANAPO ADDED. "We haven't been resting all the time, though.

We've played two semipro teams and beaten them both. And we played the Valley American Legion team that played in the State Legion tournament. We tied them 0-0 in a game called because of darkness." It might be pointed out that Babe Ruth players are 13-15 years old, while American Legion players range from 16-18. The Cougars are paced offensively by outfielder Stan Morris, who banged the ball at a .556 clip in regular season play, along with seven home runs. If enemy pitchers can get Morris out of the way they'll still have to contend with catcher Gerald Aragon.who has compiled a .536 average.

Albuquerque has the pitching to go along with all that hitting. Charlie Romero, a right-hander, is 7-1, and pitched both Cougar victories against the Cheetahs. Vic Duran is 7-0. He missed the playoff with a sore arm, but is ready to go. John Martinez is 6-2, and in four playoff innings did rot give up an earned run.
