ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL November 20, 1967 Political Credibility Gap Runs Into Turmoil Anew Journal Special MIAMI The credibility gap of the politician in the National Convention of Young Democrat Clubs of America ran into turmoil last week. After telling three reporters, in separate conversations over a of several hours, that he had pulled out of the race for YDCA chairman because of pressure from the White House level, Pierre Vessalla then denied it to other reporters and closeted himself in his state headquarters, not reappearing on the floor until Saturday afternoon. THE REPORTS of his withdrawal were widely circulated among delegates in the floor battle over the convention's stand on Vietnam and was the only subject of conversation for hours. Vessalla told an Albuquerque Journal correspondent, in the presence of three witnesses, that he had ordered withdraw by Mayor: Joseph Barr of Pittsburgh after Barr had received orders from President Johnson's appointment secretary and others high in the administration. Vessalla said the mayor told him "three federal judgeships were involved" and that unless he supported R.

Spencer Oliver did not need to bother to come home." HE DID withdraw and accepted a place on Oliver's slate. Still earlier in the day, Vessalla told the same story to Mike Wallace, CBS correspondent, and Dick Dunkin, New York Times correspondent, in separate interviews. However, when approached by George Lardner of the Washington Post and Paul Hope City Man Cited On DWI Charges, Weapon Count Erratic driving and a loaded rifle early sunday morning caused the arrest of a 40-yearold Albuquerque man on citations charging driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and suspicion of carrying a deadly weapon. Police said observed Harold V. Hedman, 2705 Virginia NE, driving erratically west on E.

Central to a red light at University. Hedman's car stopped under the light, and a rifle pointed out the driver's side window, causing a car next to Hedman's to run the red light in flight, police said. When officers stopped Hedman, they found the rifle to be a fully loaded and ready to fire, police said. In another case, Homer Lee Wasson, 47, of 622 Broadway SE, was booked into city jail on citations charging driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, after officers found his car off in the ditch near the Big I on I-40 early Sunday, police said. of the Washington Star, he denied the particulars of the story and admitted only the call from Mayor Barr and "pressures." made the denial in the presence of Wallace.

The account, which seemed incredible to committee delegates, caused a number of states in the Oliver camp to reconsider their stand. However, Oliver's strength held in most states almost all of them under the unit rule and his opponents were unable to put together. a winning combination, although the opposition makers reportedly came within 49 votes of the majority during the long night. THERE WERE other evidences of White House interest in the convention. National De cratic Chairman John Bailey arrived Thursday and was still patrolling the corridors and poolsides of the hotel late Saturday, an unusual stay for a senior party official at a convention of Young Democrats.
