ALBUQUERQUE April 19, 1960 Lewis Quits West Virginia, Will Join Pro Steelers MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (PArt. (Pappy) Lewis quit as football coach of West Virginia Monday after fretting for three months under probation. His resignation after 10 years 1 when he'll join the Pittsburgh 5-Minute Sports Page: Cubans Deny Report Of Franchise Transfer HAVANA (P--Havana General Manager Paul I Miller Monday vehemently denied a report from Rochester, N.Y., that the Havana franchise in the International League would be shifted to Jersey City within 30 days.

Sports writer George Bea- hon, at the Rochester Red Wings Florida training camp, said the Havana club would move to Jersey City for the remainder of the season after opening its 13-day opening home stand. speculation," Miller snorted at the report disturbed conditions in Cuba would cause the transfer. He told the Associated Press that league President Frank Shaughnessy already "had amply denied" the report, and that Cuba baseball officials have been quick to deny all reports that political developments might cause the transfer. Rickey Threatens Raids On Majors if 'Forced' NEW YORK (UPI) -Branch Rickey threatened to raid the major leagues "if we are forced to" in order to get the necessary players for his proposed Continental League. Rickey's threat was a radical promise departure that from the his new repeated would stay within the canopy of organized baseball.

Coincidentally or otherwise, Rickey's statement came shortly after baseball Commissioner Ford C. Frick called on the Continental League to make fewer complaints and take more positive action to qualify as 8 major league. Frick issued his challenge from Los Angeles. Hewson Will Retire After Rome Olympics LONDON (P--Brian Hewson, the European 1500 meters running champion won an 800 meters race near London, and then announced: "Whether I win a gold medal in the Olympics Games in Rome or not, I shall retire immediately afterwards." Hewson showed good form in winning the 800-meter event at Carshalton in first outdoor race of the season. He passed the 400 meters in a speedy 53.4 seconds -but appeared fading at the end.

"I was very, pleased," the four-minute miler said afterwards. "I'm aiming at the 800 meters in the Olympics." Junior Kegler Bowls 276 Game, 630 Series old junior bowler, bowled a 276 game Sunday night at the Hiland Bowl while running up 630 series. The game was the highest ever for anyone in the junior classification at the Hiland Bowl. Mike, who recently had 578 series, bowled games of 144 and 204 to go along with his 276 in his 630 series. He will do more scouting for us than coaching, said Steeler coach Buddy Parker, longtime friend of Lewis. "Although he will assist us coaching, he'll spend good deal of his time traveling and scouting players. "Pappy will do most of his scouting in the Southwest and Southeast and pay a lot attention to the Southern Conference." Gene Corum, an assistant to Lewis during his 10 years at West Virginia, was named acting head coach by university President Elvis J. Stahr, It was Stahr who said last Jan. 17 that Lewis was being reappointed "by the skin of his teeth" after the athletic council recommended his dismissal.

The university president in a an unusual statewide radio address said the board of govhad "adopted the alternative of giving him (Lewis) ernors second chance while making it clear that the board and very I take the athletic council's views very seriously." The president went on to give Lewis this ultimatum: "That we expect the coach to do his job in such a way as to rebuild steadily the confidence in him, of faculty, students, alumni and others which we believe has been diminishing for some years. "If he cannot do this in a reasonable time to than satisfaction of the board me, I authorized to demand his am resignation." Lewis termed the conditions "impossible to work under" and his quitting had been somewhat expected. "Because things are in such an impossible mess," Lewis said Monday, "I thought it best to resign, for the good of the West Virginia and for the good of the university. "I think the athletic council should do the same thing. They should do this to give the new coach a chance." Stahr did not disclose the reasons for the dissatisfaction with Lewis, beyond saying it was not because of the losing 3-7 record last season.

Lewis came to West Virginia for $8,000 a year and was being paid $13,100 this year. He coached the Mountaineers to what was nicknamed the "Golden Era" in 1952-55 when they won 31 and lost eight. His 10-year-record was 58- 38-2 that included five Southern Conference championships. It is the best posted by a football coach at West Virginia. U.

S. Judge Ben Harrison ruled in favor of the Chargers' motion to have the preliminary injunction hearing in Flowers' case moved to his home town, Oxford, Miss. The New York Giants of the National League brought the action and the Chargers, against the Ole Miss fullback, their draft precedence over the Chargers' draft. Atty Edward Mosk, reprethe Chargers, argued successfully that the entire case should be heard at one time and in one place. Mosk said the hearing ably would be held within 10 days at Oxford.
