Six employees, including an engineer, Leonard Dodds, who lived beside his transmitter, developed programs that sent residents scurrying to purchase a crystal set. They heard western and Spanish music mixed in with hits recorded on glass disks by young crooners Buddy Clark and Bing Crosby. listeners gasped as a horrified voice described the burning of the giant dirigible, Hindenburg, with all its passengers. It was 1928, and 241 men were beginning a race from California to New York, promoted by an imaginative man named C. Pyle, with his very own radio station, KGGM, mounted on a bus.

When Pyle went broke in Albuquerque, a number of local businessmen saw the possibilities of reaching Albuquerque's 26,000 residents, for the first time, over the airwaves. As with good wine, ma- turity has only made KGGM better. Within months of KGGM's coming to Albuquerque, former city manager Anton R. Hebenstreit became owner and president of the New Mexico Broadcasting Company, beginning a family interest and involvement which have spanned over four decades and as many generations of Hebenstreits. 5 I oc ii VBC Nlfbllr Nawa (cl ia is 61 lit iV OOr iai (Cl KBC Wa4.
