ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL Amazed Embalmer Finds Dead GI Lives WHEN POOL WAS KING NEW YORK In the mid-19203 the most popular book on sports and games published up to that time was an instruction manual on billiards. The exploding charge sent metal fragments ripping into their bodies. Bayne's body torn and inert was carried to a field hospital. There was no breathing, no heartbeat, no sign of life. Finally, he was taken away for dead, another name on the list of Vietnam casualties. Then an Army embalmer made a routine incision, designed to expose the femoral artery, in Bayne's groin.

It is in this artery, which carries blood to the legs, that embalming fluid is injected. There was a faint flicker of life. The astonished embalmer rushed the body back to a hospital. Medics toiled anew to revive it. Traces of vitality began to reappear, and the body of Jacky C.

Bayne took on life. Today, Bayne, 22, is in Ward 35 of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. His mother, Mrs. E. L.

Bayne, of Fort Mill, S.C., is at his side, just as she has been since he was flown back to the Stales. This is not the whole story, for her joy is mixed with a measure of sadness. During the two attempts to revive him, both before and after he was pronounced "dead," he was given 26 pints of blood. His shattered right leg was amputated above the knee. His dog, Bruno, died from the explosion.

Doctors say the human brain cannot be deprived of blood for more than four or five minutes without suffering damage. The brain of Jacky Bayne was deprived of blood much longer than that. He is rational, but he speaks haltingly. One Army doctor said he has been improving "quite remarkably." Three Army doctors, with experience in Vietnam, Korea and World War II, called the case "amazing" and "astounding." They said they had never heard anything like it. Compared to the miracle that he is alive at all, the remaining problems hardly seem insurmountable to Mrs.

Bayne. Jacky knows, at least in general, of his brush with death. He seems not to worry about it. "At first," Mrs. Bayne said, "I thought it made him awfully nervous.

But not anymore." She said her son hopes to return to college and become a coach and history teacher. He spent two years at Win-gate Junior College in North Carolina before entering the service. Jacky, Mrs. Bayne recalled, was a student minister at the First Baptist Church in Fort Mill while he was in high school. Faith always has been important to the Bayne family.

"He says the Lord brought him back from Vietnam," Mrs. Bayne said.
