ristmas increased Christmas charity efforts in the area this year met with success either equal to or better than last year's, according to officials for the Salvation Army, Good Neighbors and the Marine Corps Reserves. Their success apparently runs counter to what charity organizations in other parts of the United States experienced this year. Reports from other cities indicate that Christmas charity solicitations met with less response than in past years. "We actually came out a bit ahead of last year, I think," said Good Neighbors president Mae Eas-tin. "We helped about 800 families and were able to give them sizable amounts of food and quality toys." Good Neighbors, which has been in existence for 22 years in the Akron area, gives boxes of food at Christmas to needy families who have been referred by churches, social agencies, the welfare department and schools.

IT ALSO gives food to families on an emergency basis throughout Steel haulers urged to leave Teamsters in '78 the year. This year, Good Neighbors' 400 volunteers also distributed toys from the Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program. Mrs. Eastin said more canned goods and dry mixes were donated this year than last and that at least $6,000, about the same as in 1977, was donated and used to buy perishables like chickens, bread, apples and margarine. Marine Corps Reserve spokesmen said not as many toys were given in the Toys for Tots program this year, but the toys were of better quality.

More than 45,000 toys were given to needy children in the area. The Salvation Army is still collecting mail donations, but has gone over its goal of $125,000 by at least $2,000, according to Army spokesman Joffre Mears. Mears said that in addition to distributing food and gifts to about 2,300 families, the Army also presented 900 holiday gifts to patients at Western Reserve Psychiatric Habilitation Center and an additional 2,300 gifts at nursing homes and hospitals. election are available from the NLRB and should be obtained by truckers from as many comapnies as possible. "We are going to carry on this labor dispute until we gain the right to represent our people in collective bargaining with the carriers and direct our destiny like other workers in the land," Hill said.

FASH CALLED a strike by independent steel-haulers Nov. 11 in its drive to get bargaining independence from the Teamsters for steel haulers who drive their own rigs. Several suits have been filed against FASH by steel producers, claiming the strike violates a 1971 injunction against strikes by FASH. Hill said a suit filed in U. S.

District Court in Pittsburgh suit is the most crucial. "I feel that one will go against us, but we're ready to file an appeal if it does." Other suits against FASH have been filed in Trumbull and Lorain counties in Ohio and in Wisconsin, Hill said.
