Continued from Pag 8 Ironically, Campagnone twice appeared as one of Pat Downes's guests on the "Comment" show he now hosts. Four years ago, when Campagnone was New Castle County's Bicentennial manager, he appeared on the show to discuss that 1976 project, which operated with a $90,000 budget, he recalled.

"I enjoy being on both sides of the microphone," he said this week. He has had his share of being on the newsman's side. In 1964, after graduating with an education degree from the University of Tennessee, Campagnone "got bitten by the bug" of radio work. For the next three years he worked at Dover's WKEN station. Then, through 1970, he was news director at Wilmington's WAMS.

In 1970, he began anchoring the 11 p.m. local news on Delaware's Channel 12 TV, but lost his job "to a budget cut," he said. As with Downes, Campagnone went from the media to politics, working in freelance public relations, then in 1974, with the unsuccessful re-election campaign of Gov. Russell W. Peterson.

Immediately before his Bicentennial position, Campagnone worked as clerk of the New Castle County Council. Still, he said, during the years when his full-time work was outside the media, he kept his skills and contacts active, working as a part-time newscaster for a pair of sister radio stations in Wilmington, WSTWand WDEL. Campagnone said that, in addition to his job of news directing at WNRK, he will continue with a two-year-old business venture, publishing "Today in Real Estate," a monthly magazine. He said his main responsibilities with the real estate booklet are advertising sales. Campagnone said that shortly after he started working at WNRK where he is an old friend of owner Bill Cooke, who was working in Dover at the same time he was he began to get calls from former listeners and news sources.

"People have called to see where I've been," Campagnone said, obviously pleased. Perhaps the nicest of those calls came from Newark Police Chief William Brierly, Campagnone said, whom he knew from his WAMS news days. So far, the only thing Campagnone doesn't like all that well about the job is the hours. Because "you have to write a lot of news before you go on," Campagnone said, he is at the Walthers Road station near Christiana weekdays by about quarter 'til five every morning. But his 6 a.m.-12:10 p.m.

air stint doesn't bother him. "Radio people are kind of crazy," he explained. At WHYY, he added, the hours were 3-11 p.m. He still finds time to spend with his wife, Mary, and their children, Al 14; Andrew, 10; and Anna Maria, who will celebrate her 7th birthday on Aug. 23.

As for his first week at WNRK, Campagnone says, "It's been fun." As for his future there, he says, he's looking forward to making the popular, early morning "Comment" talk show "a little more interesting." Campagnone says he plans to get controversial guests to spark more public interest. The first such guest, he said, is Fred Schierbaum an Odessa resident whose son has been held in Cuba to face criminal charges. Campagnone also said he "plans to stay" at WNRK.
