10 TV June 19, 1980 COMPASS SPORT iurawskiSf Mark's: a winning combination -IWfW'Jsr -All "Offensively, we don't plan any-wholesale changes. "Everything we've done the past 10 years pretty much revolved around the Wing T. Along the way, we've made some additions, where today we run what looks like more to be a multiple offense than just a pure Wing T. When we first started, we were pure Wing T. Now we're much more multiple." Burawski admitted there isn't any phase of coaching he finds difficult or tough.

"Coaching is something I enjoy doing. It's a challenge, and I relish challenges. I don't find coaching difficult or posing any kind of obstacle. Through the years, sometimes the kids change, and to be a complete coach you have to stay with their thinking and their feelings about things. I think that is Don Burawski, the only head coach the St.

Mark's gridders have known, is embroilled in the sport, all year long. Sltfl photo bv Pot Crowe Spartans bring in as staff members, they continue to roll on and on and on. The reason? Burawski, of course; the man who has dedicated his life to football and anticipates each new season like a toddler looks forward to goodies under the Christmas tree. of Norris, Fischer, Smiley, Manley, Paxton and Lemon. All will be back this fall except Manley." Next to Norris, the aide with the longest tenure is Fischer.

At St. Mark's, assistants come and go, with the exception of Norris. And no matter who the MORTGAGES AVAILABLE Football 97k by Delaware State Housing Authority 4 MH, 14, By MATT ZABITKA Don Burawski of St. Mark's is one of the most successful scholastic football coaches in Delaware. He has produced three state championship teams (in 1973, 74 and 78), dozens of All-Staters (including honorable mentions) and has sent around 40 plavers on to college football.

He is the only head coach St. Mark's had has since it opened its doors. After 10 years in command, the former Salesianum School, University of Minnesota and University of Delaware star was asked if he found it more difficult with each succeeding year to get psyched for another season of football warfare. Perish the thought. football has become a large slice of his life, and he thrives on it, anxiously and enthusiastically anticipating a new season like a rookie looking ahead to getting his first stab at a varsity berth.

"As soon as one football season ends, I can honestly say I take off for two weeks at the maximum, and then get involved in an off-season program with our football players who aren't involved in other sports at the school." he confessed. "We have the football players enrolled in a weight-lifting program. That keeps up the interest and total involvement. "I think if you divorce yourself totally from football soon as one season ends, then, yes, it would become difficult to keep coming up each year. If you stay with football all year-round, you never stop to think about being tired or that it really wears on you.

I guess I have never stopped to really think about being tired. "We've already started to project what we want to do offensively and defensively this fall. We're changing our defense into a totally new scheme of things. This isn't the first time we've changed systems. We change when we feel it's important to change to benefit our personnel.

"Last year, we used an even-front defense. We're scrapping that. We've come up with a 5-look. It's different from what a lot of teams do It's a combination of what Southern Cal and UCLA do. "The latter part of July, I'm going with my family to California for 10 days.

Two of those days I plan to spend talking defense with Jed Hughes, the defensive coordinator at UCLA. "We feel our personnel next fall will be better suited to a 5-look. linebacker Gary Hicks. They'll be tri-captains this fall. "Kirwin will get a look as a possible fullback," said Burawski.

"Hicks will also be getting a shot to see if he can play at fullback. "We also expect a lot from two juniors-to-be who played quite a bit last year Mike Groves and Jim McAllister. "We have two players, both sprinters Mike Green and Wayne Schultz who could give us the fastest set of halfbacks we've ever had. No question about it. They are extremely fast, although not big in size.

Raytick is also very fast. That could give us a backfield blessed with unusual speed." Looking ahead to the start of his 11th successive season as head coach at St. Mark's, Burawski will have five of his six 1979 staff members returning Norris, Bob Fischer, Steve Paxton, Tom Lemon and Smiley. The lone non-returning coach is Rick Manley, who handled the jayvee line last fall. No replacement has yet been named.

Burawski has gone through a raft of assistants since he first took over in 1970. The only aide who started with him and is still on the staff is Norris, a graduate of Bishop Shana-han and Lincoln University. Besides having coached the jayvees for 10 years, Norris serves as the varsity backfield coach and heads the off-season weight-lifting program for football players. Burawski went down the list of aides he has had through the years. 1970 "In addition to Norris, we had Jack Hassman.

I hired him. He stayed with us two years, then left for other endeavors, later surfacing as head coach at Woodbridge High." 1971 "George Lacsny was added. He was with us two years, then left for Alexis I. du Pont High, where he has become tremendously successful as a wrestling coach." 1972 "We retained the same staff from the previous year." 197.1 "We hired Bob Fischer, who has been with us ever since. He coaches the offensive line and linebackers and has done a great job, turning out some outstanding players.

He replaced Hassman. We also hired Pete MacGaffin to coach the offensive and defensive lines. He was with us only one year, then went into private business. That year we also added Father James Delaney as the head frosh coach. He was with us one vear." 1974 hired Rick Bell to replace MacGaffin.

He was with us two years, handling the offensive and defensive lines. He left to go to graduate school at Delaware and is now an assistant coach at Colby College. Stevie Mahon was also hired as assistant freshman coach. He was with us three years, then went to A.I. as a coach.

He has since gotten out of coaching. Also joining us was John Maughan as head freshman and assistant varsity coach. After two years with us, he quit to become a certified public accountant." 1975- "Father Owen Mullen joined us as freshmai assistant and Mahon took over as head freshman coach. Jack Smiley was added that year and he's been with us ever since. He was with the freshman team his first year, then joined the varsity as defenive line and offensive end coach.

Rick Manley was added as freshman line coach. In 1976 he moved up to the jayvees and stayed with us through 1979 before leaving. His vacancy is the lone one we still have to fill." 1 976 "Our staff remained pretty much the same as the previous year, with Father Mullen becoming head freshman coach." 1977 "Joe Thomson (recently named to succeed Tom Rosa as head basketball coach) came in to help just that one season with the freshman team." 1978 "We lost Mahon to A.I and Bell left. Steve Paxton took over for Father Mullen as head freshman coach, with Father Mullen becoming head coach of girls' basketball. Also coming in that year was Tom Lemon, a graduate of St.

Mark's, who became freshman line coach. He's still with us." 1979 "Our staff was composed i j. is a 8 8 3 SI IMPRESSIVE! important. Not that there has been any wholesale or drastic change in philosophies. Being able to adjust from year to year is a challenge, but, like I said, I enjoy it." Never mind that this is the baseball, beach and swimming season, and that the thermometer has been pushing the 90s.

Burawski's mind is on football. On Monday, he initiated his first annual, week-long summer football camp on campus, with 40 people enrolled. The camp, operating daily from 9 a.m. -4 p.m., concludes tomorrow. Burawski's camp faculty listed such people as Jack Smiley and Mike Norris from his St.

Mark's staff; Jed Hughes of UCLA; Ted Kempski of the Delaware coaching staff; plus St. Mark's grads Mike Hodgson (now an assistant coach at Maine), Steve Watson (who made it with the Denver Broncos last fall as a rookie free agent), Chuck Hunter (who last fall completed a four-year career at Ohio State), and Floyd Thompson of Delaware State. Several players from last year's St. Mark's team also have been assisting. As for the Spartans' 1980 football edition, Burawski paints it as "a big challege," explaining, "We lost a lot of good players through graduation.

They'll be difficult to replace. Many of the positions will have to be filled by underclassmen." The keys to the team's success could lie with three returning starters quarterback Paul Raytick. offensive guard Gene Kirwin and Right for Today and tomorrow.
