Reyes, 43, Indianapolis; arrested By Sherri Coner DAILY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER sconerrhejoutnalnet com Using the love of good, clean humor, Franklin residents Gary Phelps and Dave Hawkins make their voices their favorite pastime Doing impersonations is their shared hobby. Performing together since 1994, Phelps, 41, and Hawkins, 46, travel from stage to stage around Indiana, offering G-rated entertainment.

"You don't have to be dirty to be a hit," Phelps said of the act they call simply "Gary and Dave." "We're clean, cornball comedy. It's a mixture of music, impersonations and comedy." While watching the Ed Sullivan Show as a 10-year-old, Hawkins started experimenting with his voice as he watched Sullivan guests perform. When his mother impersonated Mae West, Hawkins added his own style of Water Prennon. And over the years, Hawkins' repertoire of impressions grew to include Jimmy Stewart, several cartoon characters, all the actors from Mayberry and other actors, such as Pat Buttram, who played Mr. Haney on "Green Acres." When Phelps was a teen-ager, Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, became his hero.

So Phelps started strumming guitar and impersonating Cash's voice. "He has a lot of qualities I believe in," Phelps said of his longtime devotion to Cash's music. "He had a set of qualities from a simpler time and carried it over to the Motorcyclist Daily Journal staff report An Indianapolis man was injured when his motorcycle collided with a car Tuesday night at U.S. 31 and Whiteland Road. According to Whiteland police, Gregory Byers, 49, was driving his motorcycle south on U.S.

By 1976, Phelps was performing publicly, dressed in black, and occasionally in a jumpsuit to impersonate Elvis Presley. He also traveled to Nashville, and produced an album of primarily Cash and Presley music that year. After marrying his wife, Tammy, and starting a family, Phelps continued to show up in black and strum guitar at area festivals and fund-raisers.

"But it's more like a hobby now," said Phelps, a factory worker. Hawkins, also a factory worker, has done some commercial work and hopes to get some gigs in voice-overs, he said. Like Phelps, Hawkins also balances time with his wife, Connie, and their two children, in order to continue performing. Phelps and Hawkins merged their talents and created what Hawkins calls "dueling impersonations" in 1994. They've provided entertainment at local events such as the Heartnut Festival, the injures leg New Whiteland was making a left turn from the northbound lanes onto Whiteland Road.

Together, they load Hawkins truck with Phelps' guitars, microphones and amplifiers to travel anywhere they are asked to be, which includes most of the Hoosier state. "I don't know how many miles we've gone," Phelps said. The show, which includes a lot of spontaneous improvisation, has gone on in pouring rain and in sweltering heat, too, such as the Indiana State Fair, "where you feel like a piece of bacon being fried," Hawkins said with a laugh.

"We give it all we've got," Phelps said of the 45-minute, two-man performance. "We want people to feel entertained and to leave their troubles on hold for a while" "And we want to shake back the good memories," Hawkins added. "We want to leave them laughing and leave them with a good impression." in accident condition Wednesday afternoon. Neither Young nor her three passengers were injured.
