We have long been fans of Sausalito, just across the Bay from the city. Cavallo Point was one of our early discoveries and this week we found another Casa Madrona, www. casamadrona.com. Built as residence in 1885, it first became a hotel in 1906. Through World War II, ownership changes, mudslide damage and more, the hotel has persevered a nd today it is owned by MetWest Terra.

In 1967, while Pink Floyd was on their very first visit to the they were photographed in the Mansion by aron Wolman. The famous image was used to prom ote their debut album Piper at the Gates of The property has undergone a top-to-bottom renovation that has successfully blended the rich history of the property with contemporary design and modern luxury. Renovation upgrades included a square foot-spa, an amazing signature suite, and meeting space, including a boardroom, a private dining room and three new function rooms. The property offers 64 guest accommodations, including 31bayside guest rooms, many boasting harbor and bayside views, 15 lower hillside cottages, any with private decks, fireplaces and San Francisco Bay views, seven upper hillside cottages, 11hill- side mansion guest rooms, including the square-foot Alexandrite Suite atop the property. Restaurateur Larry Mindel opened Poggio Tratto- ria adjacent to the hotel after more than 30 years of operating area restaurants. delightful menu changes daily and includes pizzas and meats cooked over an open flame, along with artful pastas and salads.

It is a wonderful neighborhood restaurant where it was evident that it was a favorite. I enjoyed a fantastic puree of butternut squash soup with creme fraiche, chives and hazelnuts as an appetizer and then pappardelle, roast chicken and chanterelles as an entree. The meal was enhanced by a pecial $16 Amarone, one of my favorite wines and a bargain at this price. The restaurant provides all meal service to the hotel. The property is pet friendly, and there is a ferry just across the street that will whisk you to downtown San Francisco.
