The Hall and Rose MUCH HAS been said in recent weeks concerning the pros and cons of inducting Pete Rose into the baseball Hall of Fame. Everything I have heard and read places the responsibility of the outcome in the lap of Rose.

He has lived his life in the manner which he feels is right, and it is not up to him to repent his transgressions at the 11th hour in order to claim one of baseball's greatest honors. Although it can be argued with numbers that Pete Rose is the greatest player yet, his character cannot be excluded from scrutiny. After all, the men in the Hall of Fame are essentially heroes and therefore role models to adults as well as children. If there are drunks and womanizers in the Hall of Fame it is because sportswriters have put them there. It is the weak person who says "there are drunks and womanizers in the Hall anyway, why should we keep Pete out?" The sportswriters involved in the balloting when Rose becomes eligible should show their integrity by denying him a glorified place in history and relegating him to the footnotes in the record books.

While I hold little respect for a man who would place a wager on a game in which he has a direct effect, I hold very high respect for A. Bartlett Giamatti who had attempted to maintain some respectability for the game of baseball. Sportswriters would do well to do the same. Thomas D. Oborn, Akron ENOUGH HAS BEEN said about the Pete Rose saga of gambling.

This should end it all. If Pete worked for a woman's organization and raped all the employees he surely wouldn't be in that Hall of Fame. That is exactly what he has done to baseball. He raped the integrity of the game and what it stands He not only should have been forced out of baseball, but forced to live in a city that has no professional baseball team. He should have to live in Cleveland.
