8, 1904. To the Editor of The Times: Please reply to questions following: (1) In Chemistry how is artificial musk made? (2) Likewise, sulphate of cop. pert (3) And sulphate of Iron? (4) Where ean I find ores of alum? Yours truly, J. G. S.

ANSWER. (1) To make artificial musk, place one ounce of rectified oil or amber in a beaker, on top of "warm plate," stove, sand bath or other heated apparatus, but keep the heat down to 110 deg. Fahr.r then drop three and one-half fluid ounces of nitric acid, C. P. into the oil, best accomplished with a "burcette." When the acid and oil are mixed, set the beaker aside.

In a day or two, a black, leathery substance is produced, which' smells somewhat like musk. Take this from the acid, wash It with water, then let the artificial product dry. (2) Sulphate of copper (blue vitriol) can be made by dissolving the black oxide in sulphuric arid. When dissolved pour mixture into a dish, set aside and allow crystallisation to take place, it is also a by-product In many metallurgical proc- eases, and was manufactured at the Black Warrior mine, near Globe, Sulphate of iron vitriol, copperas.) Dissolve scrap iron In dilute sulphuric- acid, then evaporate crystallization. (4).
