The sad news the death of Mr. Car-ran, -which was received In this city yesterday afternoon, was a painful surprise to the friends of the deceased, amftng whom are numbered the members of the bar, as well as nearly all of the prominent citizens of -Southern California. Mr. Carran was found dead, in hU bed at the Clunie House, yesterday, and it is presumed his death was caused by heart disease.

He retired at midnight the night before, after making plans -for a busy day in the convention when her should rise on the following morning, but he. never and when discovered by a fellow-delegate he was a corpse. Thomas Jefferson Carran was- born on February 1, 1841, Warrensville; Cuyahoga county, near the city of Cleveland-He was a son of Robert A. and Mary Neal Carran. i After a course in the public schools he entered the tWestern Reserve College, at Hudson, O.

He graduated from tha institution, and for a time afterward taught school. He enlisted in the army, with a company, of' college students, and, after three months' service, joined the One Hundred and Twenty-fourth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Col. Payne. For gallantry on the field be was promoted, and on Ootober 31, 1862, was commissioned first lieutenant of his company. He was afterward made captain.
