WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 Ul. An Investigation of the use of surplus food donations in a West Virginia hospital cafeteria may lead to a check on the use of such food in hospitals elsewhere. Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-WVa) said today he has been advised by federal officials that they are of the opinion that donated food may not be used "for a feeding operation which Is not part of the food service to its (the hopital's) patients." "They also assured me," Byrd said, that they would have the matter investigated to spp if i similar practice was being engaged In by other hospitals in xne country.

Byrd said that during a recent visit to the Beckley Memorial Hospital at Beckley, W. he was informed donated cheese was being sold in the hospital cafeteria.
