Neighborhood children threw a party in honor of her 57th birthday. "Hulsey," as the children call her.

gained her Guardian Angel title from thankful mothers whose children Mrs. Huls has chased out of the street. In addition to being a volunteer babysitter and watchdog for the children, Mrs. Huls is a seamstress and has made dresses for dozens of little girls. She also is a softy for candy handouts.

This time, however, the candy went to Mrs. Huls. But, as one neighbor put it, "By this time tomorrow, I bet she'll have returned all the candy to the children." COMEDY? And he's really trying. The J.

Pierrepont Finch of the "How to Succeed" road show at The Playhouse concedes it's almost like killing the goose that laid the golden egg. (But then, who wants to "lay an egg" in this business?) It was the drawl, accent, or what-have-you that gave the King's Mountain, N.C. boy his first break in the theater. "THAT WAS when there was such a great run on plays with Southern themes," he recalls, "and my accent was just 'right for them." England's first professional irole in 1954 was as Herbie the southern boy in "Stalag 17." "It was a broken-down bus land truck show," he says, "but to me it was the greatest thing that ever happened." Hal bent to his lifetime longing for the stage after "a moment of truth with myself when I was a pre-law student at college." AFTER THAT England gave up his pursuit of a law career jand became involved in campus productions at the University of North Carolina. After graduation he went to New York and, partly because of his Southern accent, things seemed to come his way.

However, except for a comedy role here and there, most of his parts were heavy drama or of the classic theater. He starred in a number of notable off -Broadway productions, such as "Candide" and "The Sea- gull." There followed a year in Hollywood appearing in two daytime television series. One was the Dobie Gilles Show in which he played Bob Denver's big brother on campus. "I LOVE ANY kind of performing but I found TV very boring," he disclosed. An intense young man who admittedly "takes life too seriously," Hal confesses he is "constantly shocked" at the No finer car in the medium-price field INC.

Hal England E's Are Giveaway idea of playing the brash and hilarious J. Pierrepont Finch. "I just couldn't believe I was right for the part because I don see life that way, he said, "but I didn't have to be persuaded. When Abe Burrows told me he wanted me for Finch that was all I needed.

Abe is a genius, he's brilliant. I wish everybody could know Abe Burrows." IT IS ABE who has needled Hal about his "terrible south ern accent" and constantly cor rected him during rehearsals for this show. "It's the e's and the i's that mark you as a Southerner. The word 'imagine' is a good ex ample. Finch's song to Rose mary starts out with 'imagine' Abe would stop me every time," Hal grinned.

"This is the first time I've ever sung," notes England who has seven songs in "How to Succeed." One is "I Believe in You," which has become a popular love ballad although in the show Finch sings it to him self and thus creates one of its funniest scenes. ENGLAND says the more he plays Finch (and you have to get yourself into a frame of mind to do it) the more he loves the self -idolizing charac ter who dominates the show's plot. The 29-year-old actor whose hands are never still and who can't seem to stay anchored to a chair, feels that acting is more than a business. "It's a way of life," he says, "I can't imagine doing anything else. I don't think I could do anything else.

Of course, you have to give up a lot. For instance, I'm not married. I'd like to be and to raise a family but Well, maybe someday; I will." I Jean Seberg Weds Writer-Diplomat AJACCIO, Corsica UP) American film actress Jean Seberg and French author-diplomat Ro-main Gary were married last Wednesday in a Corsican village, it was learned yesterday.
