The people of Compton are still jogging along without any remarkable acts of somnambulism or murder to. create any undue excitement, and yet whenever that wagon filled with chairs and the chains filled with "brothers, sisters and friends," is seen wending its way along the streets, and drawn by a pair of horses that were never known to run away to excite the driver into a state of nervous frenzy, it is very evident that something is going to happen of importance within ten miles of Compton. And so it was the case on last Friday evening. Mr. A.

J. Sanor heartily welcomed the driver, horses, wagon, the chairs and their occupants and all the human persuasion was invited into the cosy littlo house and there welcomed by the family. And still the teams continued to come, of different styles and dimensions, and some of the buggies, perhaps, were a little more affectionate than others, and yet they were all bound for the "social at Sanor's," and undoubtedy behaved themselves properly. And as "birds of a feather flock together)" the older members occupied one and the yourigv. another portion of the house, though there was no "dead lino," and the intermingling became general before thoir departure.

After a goodly unmber had arrived and wcro comfortably seated, there was a call for music. Mrs. Wm. Steele sang a few songs, one of which bore a semblance to a midnight scene, and the strokes of tho clock suspended against tho wall of the room, chimed in with the accompaniment of the rgan, after which Miss Mary Whaley pro duced music from the organ, which was accompanied by a few strains of vocal music by several of the company. The house was well filled with a respect able number of the elite of Comp ton, which occasioned a need of some of those inevitable chairs which had been "resting" for a short time in that worthy vehicle of Compton fame.

And naturally enough nearly all the chairs seemed to snuggle together in quite a social attitude, and undoubtedly would have done so if the houso had been as large as Vanderbilt's parlor. The evening passed pleasantly away and as the company were about to separate and Mr. Sanor was getting his accommodating elbow in position to render overcoat assist ance, Mr. John Howard became the unassuming and genial speaker of the house" and said that as the majority of the members of tho previously appointed Commit tee on Arrangements were absent, the regular social organization would necessarily be postponed until the next meeting. f. (J. NEWPORT. A Small Sized Cyclone Makes its Ap pearance. Last Monday, about 5 o'clock in the af ternoon, as Mr.

and Mrs. Firebaugh were standing in their door watching the rain, their attention was drawn toward Newport by a noise somewhat peculiar, when to their horror they noticed a large wave of water, accompanied a heavy wind, crossing the and when near their house it separated, part going northeast and the other northwest. The one going northeast gained in force so that when it struck Mr. Jamison's place it blew over his corn crib and hay stack, and whirled a cow that was tied near by around like a top. It next struck Mr.

Henry liush house, moving it about eight or ten inches. It then passed on across the plains toward the mountains. W. Hinton, County Superintendent of Schools, gave us a pleasant call this week. Searching lor Lost Child. Yesterday evening about 5:30 o'clock a lady named Bellton, stopping with her two children at Smith's Hotel was horri fied at the sudden loss of her little boy about fifteen months old. Being a bright, active little fellow he was often allowed to toddle outside on the sidewalk, but after a diligent search by the whole force and guests of the hotel, nothing could be seen or heard of him. Mr. Smith, among others, searched all over the cityt for a long time unsuccessfully, however, until he happened to go along Main street near the court house about dark, and met the child in charge of a gentleman walking slowly, along the street, as if in search of its relatives.

He had met the child on Main street, near First. The littlo chap had strayed away over three blocks, running the gauntlet of street crossings, passing vehicles, entirely uninjured. When Smith arrived home with the child the other one, about four years old, could not be found. Again the poor mother was well nigh distracted with fear, after a momentary joy over the recovery of the other. Diligent search was once more made, the truant child being found at the plaza op posite the Pico House, uninjured also.

The Normal School. A Times reporter interviewed Professor J. H. Braly last evening just before he left for San Jose. Prof.

Braly's business hero was looking after the Normal School. He says the work progresses more favorably than was expected. The people are all of one mind, the location of the building is splendid, and when the work is completed a building will be had one-half the size of the one at San Jose at one-third of its cost. One good thing Prof. Braly did while on this visit was to make provision for a room for the philosophical Such a place requires sunlight, and was selected in the western addition of the building.

The Professor went home feeling greatly encouraged. Police Picking. In the case of the People against Stoll, before Justice Fisher, the witnesses for the people were examined, and, on motion of the District Attorney, the defendant was discharged. The case of the People against Silva, charged with assault with intent to commit bodily harm upon Tonias Bermudas, will come up before Justice Fisher. Thomas uson and Thomas Francis, the Cosmopolitan hotel burglars, were examined yesterday in the police court.

Wilson will please guilty to the charge of burglary, and Frauds does not know if he will, but may do so to-day. This will land these birds in the State prison.
