Illinois shocks No. 3 Iowa, 33-0 The Salina Journal Sunday, October 2, 1983 Page 27 By United Press International Illinois, led by a smothering defense that held third-ranked Iowa scoreless Saturday, got some additional help from the Big Ten schedule at Champaign, UK The Fighting mini, inspired by a relentless pass rush, handed Iowa its first defeat of the season, 33-0, before a sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium. Iowa quarterback Chuck Long was forced to scramble out of the pocket and take losses of 55 yards on seven sacks. "We caught Iowa at the right time and now someone's going to try to catch us," said Illinois coach Mike White, referring to the Hawk's big win over Ohio State last Saturday. Quarterback Jack Trudeau and kicker Chris White combined for Illinois' offensive punch.

Trudeau, who was taken out early in the fourth quarter, threw three first- half touchdown passes, completing 23-of-32 passes for 286 yards. White kicked field goals of 30, 20, 47 and 45 yards and kept Iowa College football pinned back all game long with booming kickoffs. "It was a super defensive effort," White said, "It was a total team effort." Illinois, 2-0 in the Big Ten and 3-1 overall, capitalized on two Iowa fumbles to race to a 27-0 halftime lead. Iowa coach Hayden Fry was nearly speechless. "I really don't know what to say other than Illinois played an excellent ballgame," said Fry after his team dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 3-1 on the season.

"I don't know what happened to us." "They beat us bad," he added. "It was not a good day for the Hawks." White kicked his 30-yard field goal on Illinois' first possession. Just 1V4 minutes later, Trudeau hit Mitchell Brookins with a bomb at the Hawkeye 10 for a 54-yard touchdown. Trudeau's pass over the middle to Brookins was the first play from scrimmage on the mini's next possession giving them a 10-0 lead. Long got the Hawkeyes down, into mini territory on their next possession, completing a 28-yard pass to tight end Mike Hufford.

But Hufford fumbled and the mini recovered at their own' 35-yard line, setting up their second touchdown. Trudeau threw a J-yard scoring pass to Cam Benson and the mini led 17-0 at the of tne first quarter. A seiond Hawkeye fumble early in thepecond quarter this one by running back Eddie Phillips was recovered by Illinois at the Iowa 11. Three! plays later, Trudeau threw over tne middle for a 6-yard touchdown pass to Dave Williams. The score the mini ahead 24-0 with 14:04 remaining in the half.

The Illini dominated and went on to score a stunning upset over the No. 3 ranked Hawk- eyes, 33-0. 24 Halfback Lionel James caught a 15-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes left and lOth-rank- ed Auburn held back a last-minute drive by Florida State to capture a 27-24 victory at Auburn, Ala.

The Tigers, 3-1, spoiled a final Seminole threat when linebacker Gregg Carr intercepted a pass from quarterback Kelly Lowrey at the Tiger 22. Auburn drove 55 yards in five plays on its first possession after Bo Jackson returned the opening kickoff 40 yards to the Auburn 45. Two passes from quarterback Randy Campbell to Chris Woods and Trey Gainous put the Tigers on Florida State's 22. Two plays later, Campbell fired a 6-yard scoring pass to tight end Jeff Parks. OHIO STATE 69, MINNESOTA 18 Keith Byars ran for three touchdowns to power llth-ranked Ohio State to a 69-18 rout of undermanned Minnesota in a Big Ten game at Columbus, Ohio.

Byars, a sophomore tailback who carried only 10 times for 87 yards, scored on runs of 1, 22 and 33 yards as the Buckeyes ran their record to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Eight players scored for Ohio State, which led 38-12 at the half. The other Ohio State touchdowns came on a 5-yard run by fullback Vaughn Broadnax; a 20-yard run by Kelvin Lindsay; Cedric Anderson's; recovery of a blocked punt in the end zone; a 7-yard pass from Mike Tomczak to Roman Bates; a 32- yard run by John Wooldridge; and a 47-yard pass from reserve quarterback Brent Offenbecher to Jay Holland. PENN STATE 36, RUTGERS 25 D.J. Dozier gained 196 yards and scored two touchdowns and Nick Gancitano kicked three 'field goals to give Perm State a come-from-behind 36-25 victory over Rutgers at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was the Nittany Lions' second straight victory after three season-opening defeats. Dozier, a freshman tailback, scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and a game-breaking 50- yard burst in the fourth period as the defending national champions rallied from a brief 16-14 deficit in the first half. Gancitano kicked field goals of 36, 42 and 19 yards. NORTH CAROLINA 38, GEORGIA TECH 21 Scott Stankavage scored one touchdown and passed for two others to lead unbeaten, fifth-ranked North Carolina from a 14-point deficit to a 38-21 victory over winless Georgia Tech at Atlanta. Georgia Tech forged into a surprise 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter on the second touchdown pass of the afternoon by sophomore John Dewberry.

But Stankavage, who had scored on a 7-yard run with 18 seconds left in the first threw touchdown passes of 28 and 30 yards to put Carolina ahead 24-21, and the Tar Heels, who had been favored two touchdowns, then cruised to their fifth victory of the season. GEORGIA 20, MISSISSIPPI STATE 7 Keith Montgomery scored on a 1-yard dive and snagged a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Lastinger to power eighth-ranked Georgia to a 20-7 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi State at Athens, Ga. Kevin Butler booted field goals from 52 and 27 yards as the Bulldogs, 3-0-1, opened their campaign for a fourth straight SEC title. Mississippi State fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the SEC. Lastinger, a senior who had been battling sophomore Todd William for the starting spot, hit 8-of-17 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown and also picked up 34 yards rushing on nine carries.

Williams, injured in last week's victory over South Carolina, did not play. ARKANSAS 38, TCU 21 Arkansas quarterback Brad Taylor guided a persistent running attack and threw two long touchdown passes in pushing the Razorbacks to a 38-21 victory over TCU at Fort Worth, Texas. The Hogs thus beat the Horned Frogs for the 24th time in 25 years and successfully rebounded from an upset loss to the University of Mississippi. ALABAMA 44, MEMPHIS STATE 13 Walter Lewis threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score to power 4th-ranked Alabama to a 44-13 come-from-behind victory over Memphis State at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Alabama, 4-0, rebounded from a 10-3 halftime deficit.

The Crimson Tide trailed Vanderbilt 17-0 last week before rallying for a 44-24 victory. Lewis, who threw two first-half interceptions, threw touchdown strikes in the second half to Joey Jones, Greg Richardson and Joe Smith. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 156 yards and also sneaked 1 yard for another score in the third quarter.
