There is a subplot involving the teacher in the next classroom. She has dedication so she isn't attracted to Harmon. She also has great legs, so Harmon is attracted to her. Calling this a subplot isn't quite accurate. It suggests that the movie has a plot.

It doesn't. By Tony Mastroianni Special to the Beacon Journal lSI Mlti SSusfi 'y i0-9! exclusive Southern California, if it is being presented accurately in movies, is Nerdsville where surfing, clowning and making out are all people do. Everyone is young, beautiful and irresponsible. Those who make it past 30 are likely to be hopelessly square. A few are villains. Since these movies are made in Southern California, maybe it really is Nerdsville.

Summer School isn't the first movie to suggest this and won't be the last. If it is successful, we can look forward to Summer School II, Summer School ill and so on. Correct that you can look forward. Director Carl Reiner, a veteran of television comedy and movies as well as being a performer, is an old hand at milking a script for laughs. With this one, he must have really squeezed.

He appears briefly at the beginning. As the titles flip by and students and teachers are shown at the countdown before summer vacation, he appears as a teacher checking out his lottery tickets. He comes up with a winner, marches into the office and announces that he is not going to teach summer school, promise or no promise, not with a $50,000 windfall. And with that, he leaves the movie. He's lucky.

A school official rushes out to the parking lot, trying to nab a teacher to take the summer school assignment, a remedial English class. But these teachers, wise to the plots of movies made in Nerdsville. quickly flee. One fails to get away, Mark Harmon playing a gym teacher about to embark on a trip to Hawaii with his girlfriend. He's nabbed, he refuses, he's told he won't get tenure so he changes his mind.

"But I'm not a real teacher," he protests. "That's all right, these aren't real students," he is told. And this isn't a real movie. The part about the students is correct. They are goof-offs, an assortment of types put together to create a series of jokes.

There are two boys who look as though they were raised on old Dead End Kid movies, but were really raised on horror films, Texas Chain Saw Massacre being their favorite. There's a girl who can't pass a driver's test and how many laughs can you get from a car going out of control? There's a pregnant student who can't find anyone to attend natural childbirth classes with her because she's not sure who the father is. There's the girl who surfs but seems to have other things on her mind when she looks at her teacher. There's a boy who sleeps all the time because by night he's a male stripper. It's just a bunch of normal 16-year-old kids.

They are together in a remedial English class. Since it is being taught by a gym teacher, that is supposed to be very funny.
