7. Promoter Jimmy Pearre said LeBaron, on the Associated Press Little All-America for three years, would celebrate his twentieth birthday on the day of the game after four years of college football. As a freshman under Amos Alonzo Stagg at the Stockton, school, LeBaron first jumped into grid prominence. As a 15-year-old 115 pounder, he threw a genuine scare into the Northwestern Wildcats in a "breather" game. COP was trailing by two touchdowns at Evanston in a game honoring the famouj Chicago coach when LeBaron appeared, intercepted a pass in the end zone and tossed a lateral to a teammate for a touchdown play which went the whole distance of the LeBaron later threw another touchdown pass.

Although COP lost the decision, the contest marked the start of a colorful grid career for the West Coast quarterback. Marlene Bauer Chosen Ladies Golfer of Year MIAMI, Dec. 18 (JP). Fifteen-year-old Marlene Bauer of Long Beach, is the golfer of the year so far as the Ladies Professional Golf Association is concerned. Fred Corcoran, tournament chairman of the association, announced the choice today and said a trophy will be awarded to the young West Coast star.

Miss Bauer won the Junior Girls Championship and the Women's Western Junior title. She was a finalist in the Texas Women's. Open and reached the semi-final round of the Women's National Amateur championship. Sunmming up the 1949 women's play, Corcoran listed Mrs. Babe Did-rikson Zaharias, Skycrest Country Club, Chicago.

as the top money winner at $8,200. Louise Suggs, Cincinnati, topped the field in major victories, winning the Women's National Open, the Women's Western Open, and the George Mays "All-American." North, South Elevens Hold Initial Workouts for Tilt in Orange Bowl Dec. 26 MIAMI, Dec. 18 (). All- star college players went through their first workouts today in preparation for the annual North-South shrine football gams in the Orange Bowl Dec.

26., Miami Coach Andy Gustafson, who with Baylor's Bob Woodruff will handle the South squad, sent his squad through a light drill, giving them an hour of limbering up, passing and punting. "Enjoy yourselves while here," Gustafson said, "but keep one thing in mind on Dec. 26 we're going out to win that ball game." Gustafson said Bob (Whitey) Campbell, University of Miami fullback wilk be used in a double role, at both fullback and left halfback. "Red Noonan of Alabama and Bobby Griffin of Baylor both look like great fullbacks, so we should be well fortified in this position," Gustafson observed. "Our squad this year is a better all-around ball club than last year.

In several positions we are better. The boys have a lot of spirit and seem to be here for more than just a joyride to Miami." The South squad worked out on Quarterbacks Field in Coral Cables. Meanwhile, Yale Coach Herman Hickman sent his squad through two practice sessions on Memorial Field at Miami Beach. The morning session included wind sprints, passing, kicking and fundamentals. In the afternoon the North squad ran several plays but spent most of the time stressing a passing attack.

"We're gonna do a lot of passing in the game," Hickman said. "It's much easier to coordinate on a passing attack than a running attack in the short time we have." Villanova's quarterback Steve Romanik did most of the throwing but tomorrow he will share that job with Boston College's Eddie Songin, who arrived too late to participate in today's drills. Most of the North's running plays are expected to be built around Lou Cecconi of Pittsburgh, Larry Coutre of Notre Dame, Bob Dueber of Pennsylvania and Billy Bye of Minnesota. Hickman's line-plunging chores will be left up to fullbacks Ray Dooney, Pennsylvania, and Art Pasqueriello of Villanova, aided by George Davis of Syracuse and Anthony Cannava of Boston College. Both squads plan two workouts tomorrow.

Woman Rider Defeats Longden fn Match Race AGUA CALIENTE, Dec. 18 (JP). America's ace Jockey Johnny Longden today lost a horse race here to a woman rider, Mrs. Wantha Davis. The 32-year-old horsewoman, a veteran of Midwestern and Western county fair and bush track riding, brought her mount home a length and three quarters ahead of Long-den's in the six-furlong match race.

She was up on three-year-old Northeast, carrying apprentice handicap weight of 118 pounds. Longden rode Grey Spook, another three year old, toting 123 pounds. The time on the fast track was one minute, 12 seconds flat. There was no betting. Longden, national champion jockey in 1938, 1947 and 1948, sent Grey Spook away in front at the break.

Mrs. Davis quickly pushed Northeast up and ahead, however. She led from then on. In the stretch, she bore out and Longden pressed Grey Spook in on the rail in a bid to overcome the flying rival. But Mrs.

Davis, riding with the strength and skill which has won her recognition as the equal of men jockeys, held to the advantage to the finish. She was crowned in the winner's circle and declared she was "ready to ride anywhere, anytime, against any other man." Longden had nothing to say. Mrs. Davis, wife of horse trainer L. L.

Davis and mother of a nine- year-old son, started her riding career in her native Liberal, Kan. She has been riding here in exhi bitions against other women as an Arizona cowgirl." She and her husband are currently living in Red- lands, Calif. Crosby, Hope May Become Part Owners of L. A. Rams LOS ANGELES, Dec.
