DAILY JOURNAL, JOHNSON COUNTY, IND. FRANKLIN GRIZZLY CUBS FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 1997 9 0 Grizzly Cubs Boys tennis (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8) She takes over a sophomore-laden team that, on the strength of its freshman class, advanced to last year's semistate. Now that those runners are a year older and wiser, Mitchell and the Cubs have lofty expectations this season. The top returners are sophomores Ali Tranter, last year's No. 1 runner; Ellie Stringer, the No.

2 runner; Julie Biddle; and Rebecca Deiwert. Also back are seniors Sara Moyer, Amber Stearns and Crystal Barnett. "Everybody is very optimistic," said Mitchell, former cross country coach at Custer Baker Middle School. "We're kind of anxious to see where we are. We're optimistic, but we're realistic.

"Of course, everyone shoots for state. But we want to get back to the semistate and place higher." 1997-90 FALL SPOUTS ROSTERS Ben Bill and sophomores Brian Perry and Chris Jones. "It's the most talented team I've had as far as their concept of the game and skills," Van Horn said. "We have some talent. "We're seven steps ahead of where we've been the last three years.

A target this year is to bust .500. We're capable of doing it." Girls soccer Last year, the Grizzly Cubs easily enjoyed the best season of their short varsity history, going 7-3-4 and being competitive against virtually every opponent. With 12 returning seniors, including career scoring leader Carrie Reese and top players Kate Ramsey, Tara Price and Lindsay Clark, coach Shaun Mahoney expects the 1997 campaign to be even more productive. "With, an old team, you expect to have experience, hard work, and you expect to have a successful season," said Mahoney, who begins his third season with the Cubs. "Our goal this year is 16 wins.

"That's a pretty big goal, but we can't be satisfied with what happened last year." Girls golf A third-place finish at last year's state tournament was plen ty of satisfaction for the Cubs. This year they're looking for a return trip, said head coach Cindy Bishop. "They got a taste of what it was like to go to the state meet," Bishop said. "And they're expecting to go back." The odds are in their favor. The Cubs have quickly rebuilt the program into a state contender.

Last season's 686 for the 36-hole state tournament was the fifth best in IHSAA girls golf history. Although two key players were lost to graduation, the early indication is that the Cubs will again be a force to reckon with. Franklin began the season with three runner-up finishes at major tournaments to defending state champion Martinsville, the runaway favorite to retain its crown. Leading the way for the Cubs is sophomore Ambry Bishop, who spent much of the summer on the national junior tour. She placed 14th at last year's state meet.

Joining Bishop are juniors Katie Cooper, Carrie Dougherty and Angie Kephart and sophomore Amy Wenning. The four can score in the 80s consistently, and anyone of them is capable of shooting a low score. Senior Amanda Bullington, sophomores Anna Waugh and Julie Drake and freshman Lauren Auld give the Cubs solid backup. It's a strange situation the Cubs find themselves in. After a number of seasons of scrambling for .500 records, they are suddenly the team to.

beat in the Mid-State Conference. That's because the Cubs return every starter from last year's 7-9 team. All are seniors. Chris Broshears retains his spot at No. 1 singles.

Likewise, No. 2 Brian Higdon and No. 3 Joe Belser return at singles. At No. 1 doubles, defending Mid-State Conference champions Rick Gruss and Craig Harper are re-united.

Brad Sever and Pete Norton are back at No. 2. "I'm cautiously optimistic," coach Dave Broshears said. "We should be pretty good. With any luck, maybe this will be our year.

"We ought to be able to hold our own against most teams." Boys soccer The Grizzly Cubs are entering their fourth season as a varsity program. And coach Chuck Van Horn has every reason to expect this year to be their best. Twelve letterwinners return from last year's 6-11 team, which won its first sectional game against Monrovia in team history.
