B4 The Beacon Journal Monday, February 9, 1987 TELEVISION 2 Mondays, 2 PBS programs written by Akron native and started studying with leg You can probably read these stories in a shorter time than it takes to watch them. So you have to create a lot around Mark Lll Dawidziak the central theme." This isn't the Ellet High School graduate's first dealings with public television. Last season, PBS aired his one-man show, Fours tor the Revolution, Jack London. When Portz left the Akron area in 1966, he hadn't decided on a choice "We just got very lucky," Portz said during a telephone interview. "It's just a coincidence that they're airing so close to each other.

American Playhouse picked up A Mistaken Charity. Then Os-sie Ruby needed pieces for their series. It wasn't supposed to be that way at all. It was just a nice surprise." In fact, the dramatizations were intended to be chapters in a trilogy of stories about older characters. Portz and Ms.

Craig pitched that concept to the National Endowment for the Humanities, which responded with grants for the project. The duo considered several short stories and selected three. The third, Staus, stars Theodore Bikel. "We came up with this idea five years ago," said Portz. "That was before Cocoon and The Golden Girls.

These shorts stories were both very easy and very difficult to adapt. They're easy because short stories tend to be very concisely written and tightly structured. "They're hard to dramatize because they usually have very little dialogue. endary teacher Lee Strasberg. For the last 10 years, though, Portz has been concentrating on writing and directing.

"You seem to have much more control," he said. "You're not sitting around waiting for someone to initiate a project. I hate down time. I put together the Jack London show just to have something to do." In 1973, he and Ms. Craig started the Labor Theater, which, through 1985, produced 22 plays for "working class audiences." A drama Portz wrote about construction workers, The Bayside Boys, starred Bruce Willis of ABC Moonlighting series fame.

Shifting their focus from stage to film and TV, Portz and Ms. Craig turned the Labor Theater into Realization Productions. His screenplay, Railroad BUI, which tells of a Robin Hood-like black train robber in the 1890s, has been sold to Universal Pictures. "Hopefully," Portz said, "it will get a decent director. It's scary not having any control or input." Writing for PBS may not pay a whole heck of a lot, but getting something accepted by one of the network's drama showcases does carry weight in the prestige department.

It puts you shoulder-to-shoulder with such wordsmiths as Oscar winner Hor-ton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird, Tender Mercies, The Trip to Bountiful), humorist Jean Shepherd (A Christmas Story) and fantasy great Ray Bradbury (The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451), authors who flinch when a commercial network comes near their works. Akron native C.R. "Chuck" Portz, however, is about to accomplish a feat that should impress any scribe. Within a week's time, PBS will air two of the writerdirector's dramas. First up is My Man Bovanne, his adaptation of Toni Cade Bambara's short story about a 60-year-old woman (Theresa Merritt) who shocks her children by becoming romantically involved with an elderly blind man she meets at a neighborhood political gathering.

Os- 1Z C.R. Portz sie Ruby will air it at 10:30 tonight (on WVIZ-Ch. 25 and WNEO-Ch. 45 WEAO-Ch. 49).

Next Monday at 9 p.m., American Playhouse will air A Mistaken Charity, which Portz also adapted and directed. Based on a short story written before the turn of the century by Mary Wilkins Freeman, Charity stars Anne Pitoniak and Kate Wilkinson as elderly sisters trying to maintain their dignity and independence while friends are pressuring them to enter a "home." Both My Man Bovanne and A Mistaken Charity were produced by Portz's wife and partner, Bette Craig. of careers. After graduation from Stetson University in Deland, he moved to New York. "I was looking for something to do," he said.

"I was working for an insurance company and bored out of my mind. I had a lot of time on my hands." Portz fell in love with the acting QNews NBCNews News Entertain, ALF The Two rs.
