B8The Beacon Journal Tuesday, February 3, 1987 TELEVISION 'Guilty of Innocence' a fresh look at old nightmare Mark Dawidziak crime, and he had an innocent belief the judicial system. This blind trust -led to early mistakes that prevented an adequate defense. Even his court-appointed attorney, Sigel (Dabney Coleman, who starred the series Buffalo Bill, the miniseries Fresno and the theatrical films 9 to 5, Golden Pond and WarGames), has doubts. By the time lawyer and client discover they can trust each other, the all-white jury has brought in a verdict. Sigel becomes more determined than to fight for Geter.

The defense is bolstered by the arrival of NAACP attorney George Hairston (Paul Winfield, star of the theatrical film Sounder and the miniseries King). Wary of the arrangement at first, of the lawyers soon realizes he needs the other's talents. The dramatic techniques used in Guilty of Innocence may not be all that innovative, yet the characterizations The outstanding cast leads us into nightmare and makes us care about outcome. turing. Director Richard T.

Heffron's brisk pacing also keeps the material fresh and the viewer intrigued. Dayton native Dorian Harewood (The Jesse Owens Story miniseries) stars as Geter, who, when the TV movie opens, has settled near Dallas to work as an engineer at E-Systems Corp. It's the summer of 1982 and he's planning a Christmas wedding to nurse Marcia Hickson (played by Debbi Morgan). Geter is a shy and studious young man. Quiet moments are devoted to reading the Bible.

He believes in the pursuit of wisdom and its gifts "honor, pleasure and peace." While getting out of his car on an August day, Geter is greeted by two guns and the words, "Police officers, we have a warrant for your arrest." He is stunned. "What did I do wrong?" he asks. After booking Geter, the police arrest roommate and co-worker, Anthony Williams (Victor, Love). Both are suspected of robbing several fast-foot restaurants in the Dallas area. Executive producer Sheri Singer and writer Harold Gast decided that this struggle for freedom was the stuff TV movies are made of, and CBS agreed. So, tonight at 9 (on WJW-Ch. 8, WKBN-Ch. 27 and Wheeling's WTRF-Ch. 7), the network will air their fact-based Guilty of Innocence: The Lenell Geter Story.

The bailiff takes the slip of paper and hands it to the judge.

You are told to stand. The judge reads the verdict: guilty as charged. The shock of the words surges through your body. Your legs buckle. Your attorney tries to offer words of comfort, but you don't hear them.

You're innocent. Somehow, the system went horribly wrong, catching you in the failed mechanism. All the happy security you once knew has been turned upside-down. You've been brutally pulled away from relatives and friends. You're facing life imprisonment.

If you're lucky, you wake up at this point and shakily push away the terrors of a dream. Lenell Geter's nightmare, however, didn't disappear with the clanging of an alarm clock. It wasn't a dark illusion conjured up by his unconscious imagination. It was terrible reality. A 24-year-old engineer living in Texas, Geter was wrongly accused of armed robbery.
