Figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research showed that only one other program, a rerun of "Seinfeld," cracked the 20-million-viewer mark.

After the Utah Jazz, led by John Stockton and Karl Malone, demonstrated in Game 3 last Friday that the Chicago Bulls were not simply going to waltz to another championship, viewership for Game 4 on Sunday jumped to nearly 26.4 million-making it the most-watched program of the week. And that was good news for NBC, which rolled over its network rivals in the weekly ratings competition with 13 of the top 20 programs and all 10 of the top 10 among viewers ages 18 to 49. ABC had the top-rated newsmagazine in "2020" and CBS had the top-rated movie in Sunday's "Our Son, the Matchmaker," a repeat. The first four games of the NBA championship have averaged virtually the identical audience as last year's first four games between Chicago and Seattle, NBC reported. The protagonist is a single mother who, reeling from a nasty divorce, pulls her life together by sharing her passion for classical music. Instructed to "just divert and amuse" her primarily black and Latino students, Guaspari-Tzavaras battles budget cuts and nasty administrators, and creates a music program that becomes the envy of the nation. Sounds familiar, like "Mr.

Holland's Opus Meets Dangerous Minds." Craven winces at the comparisons. "I felt 'Mr. Holland's Opus' was more manipulative of the audience than it needed to be," he says. What if this labor of love draws shrugs, and the critics carp, "Hey Wes, stick to what you Does that have him tossing anc turning? fright films of all time. Truth be known, Craven who holds a master's degree in literature and philosophy from Johns Hopkins University always intended to jettison the horror-mei-ster mantle. And he almost did, with such quasi-genre offerings as "The Serpent and the Rainbow" (a florid adaptation a la Val Lewton's "I Walked With a "Swamp Thing" (a campy superhero number) and "Vampire in Brooklyn" (a horror comedy with Eddie Murphy). The problem was, his "transition films" didn't perform as well as his hard-core entries Under the Stairs," "Shockers," "Wes Craven's New Which meant he was doomed to repeat his successes. Craven felt like the prototypical underworld character, usually played by Al Pacino, who's trying to go straight but the mob won't let him.

"Just when I thought I got away from them, they dragged me back," he mugs. But it was a lucrative limbo, no? "Yes, it was a two-edged sword," Craven allows from his "Scream 2" production office. "I've worked steadily making movies that made truckloads of money and were, for the most part, critically well-received." But they were still horror movies and, as Brian De Palma and John Carpenter can vouch, horror remains synonymous with "exploitative" and "sleazy." Studio chiefs don't mind cashing in on the Old Dark House as long as they don't have to build next to it. "There's that taint on horror," Craven acknowledges. "You're dealing with things that are almost obscene, and this constricts your audience base.

A large segment of the public just doesn't go to them. Commonly over-lit, underexposed, awkwardly composed jor out of focus, these are pictures made with even more than simple (disregard for traditional photo-tgraphic practices. Indeed, it's as if Morrisroe actively worked against those established standards.

Ilorrisroe's photographs get a III certain juice from being frankly disdainful of the vaunted tradition of the fine photographic print. Like the Starn Twins, who tear and crumple prints and Scotch-tape the pieces back together; or like Pierson, who'll fill the frame with a blurry still life while seemingly minor background objects stand out in sharp focus, Morrisroe plainly wanted his work to stand apart from the accepted photographic mainstream. Yet, there isn't much of interest to look at in these pictures (or in two super-8 movies he shot, which are being continuously shown in video format in the lobby of MOCA's downstairs auditorium; mostly, the films made me think longingly of the deliriously outlandish movies of Jack Smith). Like Goldin, he photographed the everyday milieu of friends with whom he lived and played. In the end, though, it isn't the individual photographic images; themselves that generate interest.

Massed together on the walls, the irresistible compulsion of their making is what makes you look twice. I guess that's another way of saying that Morrisroe is somewhat fascinating as a character, but that his art finally isn't. Museum Contemporary Art, 250 S. Grand (213) 626-6222, through Sept. 14.
