After the weekend rains, look for the fishing to be off until the water clears up again. With water temperatures beginning to rise, the fish will be spending most of their time in the deeper pools and in the shade of undercut banks and root overhangs, where the water is a few degrees cooler. These areas are best fished with natural baits, including small minnows, night crawlers, waxworms and mealworms. Smalimouth reports continue to improve from the Brandywine. Top locations include the area around Hagley Dam, the pool above Rockland Dam, the rocky stretch near the zoo, and the tidal pool just below Market Street Dam. According to reports passed along by tackle dealers, fishermen are using shiners, cray fish, jigs tipped with pork or soft plastics, and crayfish pattern crankbaits. TIDAL FRESHWATER Jumbo striped bass topped the weekly reports from Shooter's Supply, where numerous 20-pound-plus citation fish were weighed. According to shop owner John Massey, the heavr est rockfish checked in last week was a 38-pounder caught on fresh bunker by Fred Pate at the Pipes. Massey also reported good action on keeper stripers at the Bullpen, the Jersey side of the channel between the Phoenix Wreck and the Yellow Can, Augustine Jetty and Augustine Beach. Anglers also are reporting excellent catch and release fishing in the waters of the Delaware River above the C&D canal, with some ot the best fishing coming from the Power lines, New Castle Icebreakers, Delaware Memorial Bridge pilings and the new dock under construction between the mouth of the Christina River and the Twin Bridges. While most of the tidewater reports have focused on stripers, local fishermen also are catching nice white perch in the Delaware River, C&D Canal and most of the state's smaller tidal creeks and rivers. Patty Foley at Captain Bones Bait and Tackle said she weighed several perch of more than a pound, including fish caught at Augustine Beach, the Canal, Appoqumimink Creek, Si I ver Run and the tidal spillways in the southern end of New Castle County. Shooter's Supply also reported a stack of perch citations, including a Impounder caught by Lucas Culbreth on a bloodworm in the Canal. Rounding out the tidewater reports were a number of big catfish from rivers up and down the state. Topping the list was a 9-pound, 15-ounce catfish caught in the Nanticoke River on a chunk of herring by Frank Trestka. It was weighed and reported by Taylored Tackle in Laurel. PONDS Reports from pond anglers improve every week, with most of the local millponds providing good action on crappie, bluegills, pickerel, catfish and bass. Lums Pond and the Canal Pond are also providing good fishing for 4- to 6-pound hybrid stripers. The Williamsville Country Store reported citation catches tram the downstate ponds, including a 4V4-pound chain pick erel from Ingrams Pond for Daniel Zencak, and a 1-pound crappie caught in a farm pond by 4-year-old Cal Schulties. Upstate farm ponds also have been hot for crappie, according to Shooter's Supply. The shop reported weighing a M-pounder for Ron Wary, and a IVi-pounder for his 11-year-old son, Joey. One of the nicest pond citations reported for the week was a 10- pound, 6-ounce cattisn caugnt in me silver Lake (Dover) spillway on a minnow by Tommy Otto. Pleasant Hill opts to open lanes for summer weekends Pleasant Hill Lanes on Newport Gap Pike has closed its doors on summer weekends since the early 1980s. It was just too difficult to find reliable help and open play waned as winter leagues ended. That's all going to change in this summer. "This will be the first summer that I can remember that we'll be open," said Cheryl Woodward, a third generation majority owner of the 24-lane center. According to Woodward, weekend action in April has stayed significantly stronger than in past years. And that was a tactor in her Bowling 7 T Notes kAJ Holmquist plans to have Pleasant Hill open weekend evenings after 6 p.m. this summer. And, getting relir able help won't be a problem. "My step-son, Charles, has really gotten interested in the business," said Woodward, "and he wanted to try it, so we're going to give it a go." Pleasant Hill has maintained a strong Monday-through-Thursday summer league schedule. Woodward plans to offer summer weekend leagues as well as an occasional tournament. "A number of the bowlers who take part in our monthly Baker Tournament have asked whether we were going to continue it in the summer," Woodward said. "We'll probably give it a try, too." Meanwhile, Pleasant Hill Lanes will conduct its fifth and final qualifying squad for the Qubica International Family Doubles Tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. The entry fee is $25 per pair. The top two pairs in each of four divisions (adultteen, adultyouth, parentteen, parentyouth) will advance to the state finals June 9 at Doverama Lanes. There the Pleasant Hill finalists will battle qualifying pairs from Seaford Lanes. Two winning pairs at Doverama (parentteen, parentyouth) will advance to represent the state in the international finals to be held at the Main Event in Grapevine, Texas, in late July More than $30,000 in scholarship money will be rewarded in Texas. Monica Smith won a handicap double elimination tournament last weekend at Pleasant Hill. Smith defeated Ed Rini, 207-173, in the title match. At First State Lanes, Randy Schwartz and James Clark combined to grab a handicap doubles tourney win, while Keith Poppiti claimed the optional singles.
