Largely, but the earnest telefilm hardly does the real-life Judds justice, missing out on a lot of their native savvy and sharp wit in playing up their naive origins. Or is the movie a saga of infighting on the road to final intra-duo harmony? This is the most intriguing angle, but director Bobby Roth and scripter Rama Laurie Stagner frequently and teasingly touch on archetypal mother-daughter resentments without ever getting quite to the heart of any core conflicts. The story proceeds in inevitable flashback from the Judds' "farewell concert" in 1991, as Naomi was about to retire due to hepatitis and Wynonna was about to embark on a solo career.

The young Naomi (a good child-actress turn by Cari Shayne) is the sort of feckless but luckless girl who gets pregnant on the very first try. Music doesn't appear to have much impact on the soon-divorced mom and daughter's lives till Wynonna demonstrates her remarkable talent as a beyond-willful teen-ager, and the two pack up for Nashville, achieving almost-instant stardom. And so, when I was asked to do it, I leapt at the opportunity." Bringing the material to the small screen provided a challenge to Holland, whose mission was to build suspense over two nights in a story that takes place mostly on an airplane and includes little action and no central character.

"On a feature film, you're saying to yourself, 'Can I hold an audience for 95 to 150 he said. "Here, you're going for four hours. That provides opportunities to explore character, but it's also a lot harder holding an audience over that long a period. "Usually what happens when you're doing a dramatii film is that it's basically focused on two people, with some subsidiary characters. Here, I had to keep and develop 10 people, basically in one set, for more than two hours." And he loved it.

"I had such a good time with this," Holland said. "How often do you get to do a show that brings a smile to your face?" The demands of the job are what attracted Holland to directing. A native of Highland, N.Y., which sits across the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie about 75 miles north of New York City, he started out in Hollywood as an actor before refocusing his attention after three soap operas, more than 200 commercials and dozens of movies. "I sort of felt like I grew out of acting," said Holland, whose biggest role was the third lead in the 1970 "A Walk in the Spring Rain," starring Anthony Quinn and Ingrid Bergman. "I just got more interested in the whole thing of it, rather than in just acting.

"I was in the Actors Studio, and I started working in the play writing unit. And then I started directing little one-act plays, and that made me aware that I wanted to direct. Then the problem was convincing somebody to let me do it." About 10 years later, after turning to school and graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a political science degree from he finally sold a screenplay, "The Beast Within," which was pro duced in 1982. He followed with scripts for "Psycho II," "The Class of 1984" and "Cloak and Dagger'; before making his directorial debut with a modern vampire movie, "Fright Night," in 1985. Although he has ventured 6ut'T side the horror realm he directed Whoopi Goldberg in 1987's "Fatal Beauty" and Timothy Hutton 1993's "The been labeled a genre specialist.

"You know, you do the most, interesting material that you're offered," he said. "I don't think I ever had an inferiority complex about it, but so many people have asked me in a condescending way about specializing in one type of film that you start to feel like you should be ashamed of doing genre work. I don't personally feel that. I don't think the genre matters. the material." Holland, though, will argue that his work has been mislabeled.

1 "I don't think I really do horror movies," he said. "I think I do suspense movies, because suspense, is really what I work off of trying to find a rising suspense line, 'Child's Play' is definitely horror, but I would argue that 'Fright Night' is partially comedy." And "The Langoliers," Holland said, is science fiction, with a suspense line that builds as monsters approach the airport "It's a throwback," he said. "It's like one of those TV dramas they used to do live back in the '50s, which relied on the characters and the interaction of people." In between, the other players violinists David Harrington and John Sherba and violist Hank Dutt essayed with varying intensity and degrees of connectedness. The Great American Microtonal-ist Harry Partch's "Two Studies on Ancient Greek Scales" wove a strange, raw beauty, as Harrington traced quixotic melody lines out of tune by Western, 12-note scale standards against a percussive, pizzicato backdrop. Back in the land of "precise" pitch, often played with unnerving regularity and, well, repetitious redundancy, the quartet brought out the Glass. For some reason, Phillip Glass' Quartet No. 5 has been a Kronos concert staple of late, but it's not one of the composer's better works.

Elements of maudlin late-19th-century parlor passages mix with late-1950s rock 'n' roll rhythm-section riffs and bluegrass train-song quips, with no particular destination in mind. Ken Benshoof "Song of Twenty Shadows," written in memory of violist Dutt's late life-partner, is a poignant lament geared around Dutt's featured part, now sad, now angry, now serenely reflective. The highlight of the evening, Adams' 1994 work "John's Book of Alleged Dances," for string quartet and prerecorded tracks of mostly "prepared" a la John Cage piano, survived technical snafus and sync problems to unveil a wonderfully paradoxical spirit Sturm und Drang meets Looney Toonish-ness, swerving harmonic colors meet post-minimalist forward momentum to create a sort of madcap iridescence. Even the encores trotted the globe: Hamza El Din's "The Wa-terwheel" and the campy relief of Michael Daugherty's "Elvis Everywhere," a harmless whiff of kitsch on the way out. -JOSEF WOODARD The Kronos Quartet performs tonight at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall, with special guest Foday Musa Suso, 8 p.m.
